Character Spotlight: The Phoenix Force

The embodiment of limitless cosmic energy — The Phoenix Force — joins the battle in MARVEL SNAP!

On Reveal: Revive one of your destroyed cards and merge with it. That card can move each turn.

In the final moments of the previous universe, the Phoenix Force saved all of existence from eternal damnation and was subsequently reborn from the cosmic fires of the Big Bang that created the current universe.

The Force takes the form of an immensely powerful and beautiful cosmic entity, traveling through the universe as a giant fiery bird. When it encounters a worthy host, it fuses with that being and transforms them into the Phoenix. The Phoenix, whether as itself or possessing a being, holds near infinite cosmic power capable of unfathomable good and evil. As such, the Phoenix Force must be regarded as an extinction-level threat.

Humanity first witnessed the Phoenix Force when it replaced Jean Grey during a shuttle crash and saved the X-men and crew onboard. Instead of possessing her, the Force placed Jean Grey in stasis at the bottom of the ocean and impersonated her, becoming the powerful superhero known as Phoenix.

Phoenix has been reborn numerous times and taken hold of many hosts, including Dark Phoenix (Jean Grey), Cyclops, Namor, Magik, and Colossus. Eventually, the heroes managed to drive away the Phoenix, seemingly for good…

…It was only a matter of time before the blazing cosmic entity returned to possess a new host —
Now, the Phoenix Force will merge with other characters in MARVEL SNAP!!

On Reveal: Revive one of your destroyed cards and merge with it. That card can move each turn.

In MARVEL SNAP, the Phoenix Force revives one of your destroyed cards and takes control of it.

The Force is especially benefitted by resurrecting cards which enjoy moving, such as the Human Torch or Multiple Man.

Shuri also synergizes extremely well with the Phoenix Force, as her effect doubles the combined power of both Phoenix and the revived card.

On Reveal synergies are often wonderful targets for Phoenix Force to resurrect, as it triggers the effect another time.

Phoenix Force is at its absolute strongest when locations like Death’s Domain or Vormir appear, enabling a potent combination of both destruction and the ability to move the Force to hard-to-reach locations.

Let us welcome the omnipotent, everlasting, and infinitely powerful force that is the Phoenix Force to MARVEL SNAP!

Character Spotlight: Spider-Man 2099

Hailing from the alternate future of Earth-928… Miguel O’Hara — known as Spider-Man 2099 — swings into MARVEL SNAP!

The first time this moves to a location, destroy an enemy card there.

Miguel O’Hara was a brilliant, prodigal child who was awarded enrollement in the Alchemax School for Gifted Youngsters at an early age. He proved to be a genetics genius and eventually became the project head of the genetics program for Alchemax.

Miguel’s genetics research at Alchemax was specifically inspired by surviving records of Peter Parker, AKA Spider-Man. He held aspirations to one day create a similarly powered person, which led him to experimenting upon animals’ genetic structure. After a fatal experiment involving a criminal test subject failed, Miguel decided to quit Alchemax in protest of their unethical practices.

However, Miguel’s spiteful colleague, Tyler Stone, poisoned him with an addictive drug called Rapture as punishment for quitting Alchemax. Miguel’s system was then bound with Rapture and became dependent upon it to survive, but the drug was only available through Alchemax, forcing Miguel to either continue employment at Alchemax or buy Rapture illegally through the black market.

To escape this predicament, Miguel hatched a plan to sneak into Alchemax and use the gene alteration machine on himself in an attempt to reset his genetic code. His jealous supervisor, Aaron Delgato, sabotaged the experiment and mistakenly endowed Miguel with fantastic spider-like abilities.

After this “failed experiment,” Miguel had become genetically imprinted with 50% spider DNA, granting him superhuman strength, speed, stamina, reflexes, agility, and durability. He discovered that he had grown fangs, talons and spinerettes which could be used to fight off enemies and dexterously traverse terrain.
Following this transformation, Miguel recognized how ignorant he had been to the oppression and pain caused by corporations in his world. He saw his newfound augmented form as an opportunity for change — to protect ordinary people against abusive corporations. He decided to embrace his identity as the new Spider-Man, donning his costume and publicly proclaiming that he will use his powers to fight in favor of the greater good against those in power who abuse their influence and authority.

Spider-Man 2099 possesses many unique skills in addition to the usual strengths of a spider-person. His telescopic and night vision enable Miguel to see far greater distances, with perfect clarity, and in near-complete darkness. His genetically-enhanced metabolism affords him advanced longevity and a self-healing ability that regenerates damaged body tissues at a highly-accelerated rate.

Spider-Man 2099’s razor-sharp fangs can secrete paralyzing venom and his organic webbings are particularly strong and adhesive, making them ideal for both movement and restraining foes.

Additionally, Miguel’s genius-level intellect has proven useful in creating a special freestyle of fighting that allows him to make full use of his strength, speed, and agility, as well as gifted computer hacking and marksmanship abilities.
Miguel O’Hara is not known for messing around — the cruel world of 2099 has taught him that the ends justify the means — keenly demonstrated by his effect:

The first time this moves to a location, destroy an enemy card there.

When it comes to protecting your locations, he’s one of the most ruthless payoff cards for the Move strategy — destroying an enemy card the first time you move him each game. You can drop him after Iron Fist for a surprise attack, or play him out and leave your opponent guessing as to whether Heimdall or Ghost-Spider is coming next turn to ruin their plans. He can even destroy Cosmo the dog — but please don’t, Cosmo is adorable and doesn’t deserve it!

Spotlight Cache: More Cards for More Players!

We’re excited to announce one of the biggest changes to MARVEL SNAP since its launch – the Spotlight Cache. Spotlight Cache means more cards, including brand new cards, for more players than ever before! We think this will make every card release more exciting, impactful, and accessible to everyone. Get ready to grow your collection FASTER THAN EVER!

What is the Spotlight Cache?

Spotlight Cache is a brand new way to acquire newly released cards, Series 4 cards, and Series 5 cards. Spotlight Cache system will appear after you’ve passed Collection Level (CL) 500. A Spotlight Cache will replace Collector’s Caches and Collector’s Reserves every 120CL. This means that one in every 10 Collector’s Reserves are becoming Spotlight Caches.

Why are Spotlight Caches so exciting? The answer is the CARDS! Each week, three different Series 4 and 5 cards will be featured – including the new card released that week! When you open a Spotlight Cache, you’re guaranteed to open one of those three cards, or a random S4/S5 card. If you already own one of the featured cards, the Spotlight Cache will instead feature a time-exclusive variant for the featured card. A picture is worth a thousand words, though, so here’s what it might look like for a week:

The Spotlight Cache reward pool changes each week and features 1 brand new card, 2 existing Series 4/5 cards, and a Random Series 4/5 card.

More Cards for More Players

You might be asking, “Why are you making this change?’. We want to bring more cards to more players – and this system helps make that possible for all players, no matter where they’re at in their journey. Whether you’re still working through Series 3 or you have nearly all Series 4/5 cards, you’ll see an increase in cards earned with the change to Spotlight Cache. If you’re a free-to-play player that completes your Daily Missions, you can expect to get a Series 4/5 card from your Spotlight Cache almost EVERY WEEK – this is a huge increase from having to grind 6000 Tokens to get a single Series 5 card all month in the old system!

Monthly Comparison: Series 3 Incomplete Player Sample

Monthly Comparison: Series 3 Complete Player Sample

Every Card Release is Impactful and Accessible

One of the main feedback topics we’ve seen is that players didn’t feel they were able to enjoy or engage with new card releases each week. We definitely want to address this! Previously, we saw a very small portion of players able to get the new card each week. But, with Spotlight Cache, ~25% of players who finish their Daily Missions can get the new card each week – for free! This is going to bring more diversity to the decks you’re playing and seeing each week. Get ready to experiment in the Proving Grounds, build brand new decks, and face off against new cards while ranking up!

Your Collection, Your Way

We know you like to target which cards you’ll add to your collection – this isn’t being removed. Featured Series 4 or Series 5 cards in Spotlight Cache give you the perfect opportunity to add cards you’ve been looking for to your collection. Have you been hoping to get the mighty Thanos to lead your growing army of heroes and villains? When Thanos is being featured in the Spotlight Cache, opening one that week gives you 1 in 4 chance to earn Thanos! Opening another one will give you 1 in 3 chance, and if you open 4, you are guaranteed to get all the featured Series 4/5 cards that week – including Thanos!

While the Collection Level Track and Spotlight Cache system will be your primary source for new cards to add to your collection; Collector’s Tokens and Token Shop will still exist as a back-up support system for unlocking targeted cards. As part of this change, we’re increasing the overall availability of cards, decreasing the emphasis on Token Shop, and decreasing the Collector’s Tokens that players receive in other ways. If a card has been eluding you in the Spotlight Cache, spending Collector’s Tokens in the Token Shop is another path to target the exact card you want. But, these won’t be your primary card acquisition tools, so spend them carefully and wisely!

Upgrade Cards to Get More Cards

We want to continue the excitement of progressing your Collection Score through the early Collection Level Track. For many established players, they missed the excitement of earning new cards in the Collection Level Track. So, we’re going back to our roots: upgrade cards to get more cards. We think this will be a much more enjoyable experience, provide clear goals, and again… bring more cards to more people!

We think the Spotlight Cache system will be a huge improvement to card acquisition for all MARVEL SNAP players. We’ve been talking about card acquisition changes for a while now and you’ve probably noticed a few changes while we’ve been exploring how to make this a better experience for all players. As always, this is an iterative process… and we plan on continuing to change things up and improve the system! Please keep sharing your thoughts and feedback so we can deliver on the forever game we believe MARVEL SNAP can be!

If you have more questions… read the FAQ below!

  • What happens to saved Collector’s Caches and Collector’s Reserves when the change happens?

Any saved Collector’s Caches or Collector’s Reserves will be turned into Spotlight Caches at the appropriate rate once the new system is live.

  • How are Collector’s Caches and Collector’s Reserves changing?

Every 4 Collector’s Cache now contain:

2 x Series 3 or below cards

1 x 100 Tokens

1 x Credits Box that can contain 150 or 200 Credits

Every 9 Collector’s Reserve now contain:

2 x Series 3 or below cards

1 x 100 Tokens

3 x Credits Box that can contain 150 or 200 Credits

3 x Cosmetic

  • Will Series 4 and Series 5 cards still appear in Collector’s Reserves?

All Series 4 and 5 cards are moving into the Spotlight Cache. Spotlight Cache replaces the current system and results in more cards for more players.

  • Are there fixed odds of finding a Series 4, Series 5, or Spotlight Variant in Spotlight Caches?

Think of the Spotlight Cache like a bag of four items. You pull out one at a time at random, each item having equal chance to be picked. You’ll have a 25% chance to get one of those, then a 33% chance to get one of the remaining options, then a 50% chance to get one of the remaining options, and finally a 100% chance to get the last item. Once the bag is empty, we fill it back up with four items. With Spotlight Cache release, whether something is S4, S5 or is a variant does not impact their drop chance. We want to see how this system plays out and continue to improve the system!

  • Will I know about Spotlight Cache rewards ahead of time?

We plan to announce the weekly Spotlight Cache reward pools at the start of each season. We hope that this will allow you to plan ahead and get excited for what’s coming in each season of MARVEL SNAP.

  • How does this interact with Flexible Series Drops?

This feature requires a healthy supply of Series 4 and 5 cards to function—more than our previous system could maintain over time. The recent reduction in Series Drop frequency for cards from Series 4 to Series 3 ensures that we can continue giving away this many cards through Spotlight Caches at this pace. We will announce any Series drop at least two weeks in advance of it happening. Since each of these announcements will precede a patch by two weeks, that’s a 6-week “safe” window to spend tokens on a card without it dropping.

June 22nd – Balance Updates

Hope everyone has been enjoying the new Conquest mode! We’ve got a suite of balance updates for you this week before the first Infinite Conquest starts next week: one nerf affecting a wide range of decks, and three buffs. Let’s get right to it!

Doctor Doom
  • [Old] 6/5 – On Reveal: Add a 5-Power DoomBot to each other location.
  • [New] 6/5 – On Reveal: Add a 4-Power DoomBot to each other location.

Doctor Doom is our most played 6-Cost card by a large margin, and for good reason. His ability to spread power and bypass restrictive locations makes him an excellent card in many past and current top decks like Lockdown, Electro Ramp, and Lockjaw. In fact, he’s so good at contesting “closed” locations that he actually encourages decks to be built around doing so more often. By taking 1 Power off his DoomBots, we’re looking to tone down his overall strength and improve the diversity among our 6-Cost cards in top decks. While we’re sad to lose the symmetry between Doctor Doom and his DoomBots, we hope this will bring his decks more in line with the rest of the competition–besides, Doom’s tougher than a Doombot.

Red Skull
  • [Old] 5/12 – Ongoing: Enemy cards at this location have +1 Power.
  • [New] 5/14 – Ongoing: Enemy cards at this location have +2 Power.

Red Skull terrorized our meta for a while in a strong partnership with Shuri. Now that Shuri has been nerfed, we felt it was a good time to restore Red Skull to a higher value. Red Skull is a more interesting card with more base Power and a more detrimental Ongoing effect. This has helped him perform well in decks with cards like Enchantress, Sauron, and of course Shuri. We hope powering up Red Skull will give these decks a boost and create more meta diversity. Sorry, Cerebro.

Nimrod
  • [Old] 5/5 – When this is destroyed, add a copy to each other location.
  • [New] 5/6 – When this is destroyed, add a copy to each other location.

This one’s been on our wishlist for a while, but we’d been wary of it for fear of making Galactus more popular as a consequence, since that was the most popular Nimrod deck. Now that we’ve shipped our Galactus nerf, we’re confident in giving Nimrod a small boost that will hopefully make him more promising fodder for Forge, Shuri, and Venom. We’ve also got some upcoming cards we expect to reward destroying cards even more, so stay tuned for those synergies!.

Nick Fury
  • [Old] 5/7 – On Reveal: Add 3 random 6-Cost cards to your hand.
  • [New] 4/5 – On Reveal: Add 3 random 6-Cost cards to your hand.

Nick Fury has never quite found a place to shine. As a 5-Cost that grants 6-Cost cards, there’s not much time to take advantage of the cards he spawns. By bumping him down to a 4-Cost, effects like Titan and Quinjet give players the opportunity to play two of his reinforcements on turns 5 and 6. Plus, it gives Agent Coulson the ability to give Nick a call when he’s in a jam and could use some avenging. We’re excited to see what you’ll assemble with Nick Fury’s new stats!

Pig
  • [Old] 4/0 – “oink!”
  • [New] 0/0 – “oink!”

Spider-Ham’s token wasn’t meant to consider its own base cost to be 4, and that has some interactions with cards and locations like Zabu and Asteroid M that just aren’t intuitive to play with. We’re adjusting it to 0-Cost to avoid those interactions.

Bonus OTA: KrakoNAH

With this update, we’re also taking Krakoa out of the game to be redesigned at a future date. Turn 5s everywhere rejoice!

Thanks for stopping by! Please note that we will not have our regular biweekly OTA on July 6th in observance of our studio’s summer shutdown, so our next update will be our full-sized patch currently scheduled for July 11th. Happy Snapping, and good luck in your Infinite Conquests!

Character Spotlight: Spider-Ham

Today we welcome Peter Porker — the heroic spider-turned-pig known as Spider-Ham — To the world of MARVEL SNAP!

On Reveal: Transform the highest-cost card in your opponent’s hand into a Pig, keeping its Power and Cost.

Peter was a spider who originated on Earth-8311, in a universe comprised of anthropomorphic animals.

While the spider known simply as “Peter” began as nothing spectacular, residing in the basement lab of scientist May Porker, an experiment-gone-awry caused May to accidentally irradiate herself and bite Peter in a fit of delusion!

This bite from his anthropomorphic pig-scientist host then caused Peter to transform into an anthropomorphic swine himself! Peter quickly discovered that not only had he become a cartoonish pig, but also retained his spider abilities, and thus inherited May Porker’s last name and dedicated himself to fighting injustice as… Spider-Ham!

Spider-Ham’s abilities extend beyond just the Spider-Sense demonstrated by those more ordinary Spider-Heroes. Peter Porker also has an uncanny ability known as Spider-Nonsense — which enables his cartoonish spidey-pig nature to only become stronger in response to surrounding danger! The greater the threat, the more cartoon Spider-Ham becomes!

Spider-Ham’s Spider-Nonsense is demonstrated in MARVEL SNAP through his wacky On Reveal ability:

On Reveal: Transform the highest-cost card in your opponent’s hand into a Pig, keeping its Power and Cost.

Peter whips out a massive cartoon mallet from Hammer Space, right in the face of your opponent’s most expensive card — transforming it into a Pig with no abilities! That ability is no boar!

Spider-Ham is a great response to large end-game plays such as Doctor Doom, Galactus, Heimdall, Odin, and Death! You can play him on turn 1 for some quick disruption, or hold him until later in the game to surprise opponents by neutralizing their finisher.

Let’s all give the kooky Spider-Ham a warm welcome, as he hogs his share of the spotlight in the Spider-Versus season of MARVEL SNAP!!

BALANCE UPDATES

We’ve got one major change this week, and two smaller adjustments we anticipate will make some of our lesser-played cards a lot more fun. We know this patch is coming a couple weeks after High Evolutionary’s release, but bear in mind we implemented these changes well in advance of his release, so we’ll be using OTAs and our next patch to address changes that may be related to that card’s impact on the metagame.

CARD UPDATES

  • Galactus:
    • [Old] 6/2 – On Reveal: If this is your only card here, destroy all other locations.
    • [New] 6/7 – On Reveal: If you’re winning this location and this is your only card here, destroy all other locations.

Galactus is a card we’ve kept a close eye on since release. His ability warps the game, changing the goal for both players from claiming two locations to waging war around cards that “counter” him/his finishers and priority. We don’t mind mixing things up a bit from time to time in that regard, but Galactus’s play rate was moving past the thresholds we set to determine both competitive diversity and also how frequently the game gets reduced to that state. Because Galactus is inherently counterable, we waited to see if the metagame could sort itself out, but it hasn’t. Galactus’s popularity has increased, his winrate has only grown, and many players don’t even enjoy beating him–these are problems worth solving.

The original design for Galactus is difficult to rebalance, because it has essentially one value we can adjust: Power. However, lower Power can mean that Galactus always loses priority, making post-Galactus counters like Shang-Chi or Enchantress difficult to play. Meanwhile, increases may let you beat these cards more naturally, especially Professor X. Either way, it’s still all about the counters. We considered making him the first true 7-Cost card, but that was just less fun and weaker with the same issues. We also considered full redesigns for Galactus but didn’t find anything that cleared our bar, which is very high.

Ultimately, we decided to make Power a functional way for us to tune Galactus, which led us to this additional “winning” restriction. Caring about winning this way lets players contest Galactus within the core fun of SNAP–using Power to challenge for locations. Relying exclusively on counters is frustrating because neither player has much control over their appearance, but every deck should have the ability to muster 7 Power. We expect he’ll be stronger in decks that play him on turn 6 after Hobgoblin or Nimrod, but worse in the stronger, more popular Galactus archetypes. If this change proves too much or too little, it’s also given us the ability to tune him further via OTA and find the healthiest spot.

  • Maria Hill:
    • [Old] 2/3 – On Reveal: Add a random 1-Cost card to your hand.
    • [New] 2/3 – On Reveal: Add a random 1 or 2-Cost card to your hand.

We’re giving Maria Hill the ability to roll a 2-Cost card primarily to make her a better thematic parallel to Agent Coulson. We expect this to be a slight buff as you’ll occasionally get a better card from her, and half the time your Quinjet will provide a discount in those scenarios too. Not a huge mover, but a more enjoyable card.

  • Dazzler:
    • [Old] 4/4 – Ongoing: If you have 4 cards at each location, +6 Power.
    • [New] 3/2 – Ongoing: +2 Power for each location that’s full on your side.

Dazzler’s old ability didn’t give enough of a boost to reflect the level of investment that filling your board demands, and never really found a home competing against many of our strongest 4-Cost cards. We decided to give her more incremental boosts as you fill locations, which also lets her benefit from Space Throne, and shifted her rate to 3-Cost. In addition to changing up the competition, she may have a home alongside Brood with Silver Surfer, in Patriot with Ultron, or other shells.

Character Spotlight: Silk

MARVEL SNAP’s newest initiate is the incredibly agile spider-hero — Cindy “Silk” Moon!

After ANY card is played here, this moves to another location.

Cindy Moon was born to Nari and Albert Moon Sr. in Manhattan, New York, where she grew up as a Korean-American teen coasting through her classes on her keen photographic memory. While her parents preached prioritizing her studies, Cindy preferred spending her time playing hockey and hanging out with her boyfriend, Hector Cervantez.

That is, until one day, when she attended a science demonstration for extra credit, where she was bitten by the same irradiated spider which bit fellow attendee Peter Parker. Peter Parker’s life changed forever when he was bitten by the radioactive spider — but unbeknownst to Peter for over a decade, the spider had also bitten his classmate, Cindy Moon. This one tiny bite completely shifted their lives and identities, as they discovered strange, superhuman spider-like abilities forming.

When her powers were revealed, Cindy was promptly taken from her family and handed over to Ezekiel Sims, a billionaire who had discovered certain people have powers that mystically connect them to animals. Sims held Cindy in a bunker where they honed her newfound abilities and hid her from Morlun — a member of a group called the Inheritors, who hunted down people who were also animal totems.

Cindy spends 10 years in Ezekiel’s bunker, receiving combat training and watching recordings of the heroic Spider-Man in order to better understand and control her powers. During this time, Cindy’s family mysteriously disappears and she consequently gains a much stronger motive toward crimefighting justice.

When Peter Parker learns of Cindy’s situation, he breaks her out from the vault and they instantly discover an irresistible attraction to one another due to their intermingling spidey pheromones.

With Cindy Moon back out on the streets, she adopted the vigilante superhero identity “Silk” and joined forces with Peter in battling Morlun. She also landed a job at the Fact Channel, where she used the news company’s resources to track down her parents’ whereabouts. Being locked away for so long certainly took its toll on Cindy, but her inner strength is undeniable, as is her determination to take back control of her life and fight evil as Silk.

Silk is one of the most agile heroes in the Multiverse, able to generate organic webbing from her fingertips to form weblines, barbed hooks, and even clothing. She exhibits superhuman strength, speed, endurance, and is able to cling to walls with perfect balance and equilibrium.

Silk’s ability to nimbly jump all over the place is represented in MARVEL SNAP by her effect:

After ANY card is played here, this moves to another location.

Her Spidey abilities make her a particularly potent addition to Move-based strategies. You can bounce her from location to location to buff your Kraven, or sneak her into hard-to-reach locations like Sanctum Sanctorum. If you’d like to keep her 5 Power in one place, try filling your other locations with cards to make her a simple but strong 2/5 play.

Let’s help Cindy Moon in her search for her family by honing her combat abilities and fighting off the baddies of New York together — Welcome, Silk, to MARVEL SNAP!!

June 8th – Balance Updates

Happy Spider-Versus season! We’ve got 5 updates for you this week, including an update to a starter card. Let’s hop right in!

CARD CHANGES

  • Spider-Man
    • [Old] 4/3 – On Reveal: Your opponent can’t play cards at this location next turn.
    • [New] 5/4 – On Reveal: Your opponent can’t play cards at this location next turn.

Spider-Man performs very well in multiple decks like High Evolutionary lockdown and Galactus. We want to avoid these kinds of playstyles being too powerful as they are frustrating to play against, so we’ve decided to adjust Spider-Man to limit his play in combos like Spider-Man into Professor X. While this does put him at the same Cost as his lockdown peer Professor X, we think that their effects are distinct enough that they can both sit at 5-Cost.

  • Beast
    • [Old] 2/2 – On Reveal: Return your other cards at this location to your hand. They cost 1 less.
    • [New] 3/4 – On Reveal: Return your other cards at this location to your hand. They cost 1 less.

Bounce decks with cards like Kitty Pryde, Bast, and Hit-Monkey have been performing very well lately. Beast in particular stood out to us as a very powerful enabler in the deck. We want Beast’s effect to take more investment to get returns, so we’re adjusting him to be a 3-Cost card. This also helps give Falcon more room to spread his wings, as he often felt like a worse Beast without the cost reduction effect.

  • The Hood
    • [Old] 1/-2 – On Reveal: Add a Demon to your hand.
    • [New] 1/-3 – On Reveal: Add a Demon to your hand..

Many decks are able to take great advantage of the cheap 6-Power Demon while neutralizing The Hood’s negative Power. We’re making a small nerf to The Hood’s Power to make him more punishing to play if you’re unable to counteract his base Power. Notably, this is actually a buff to Viper decks that hand The Hood over to the opponent to deal with.

  • Rogue
    • [Old] 3/1 – On Reveal: Steal an Ongoing ability from a random enemy card at this location.
    • [New] 3/2 – On Reveal: Steal an Ongoing ability from a random enemy card at this location.

In a similar vein to our Enchantress buffs, Rogue is a card we’d expect to see more of to counteract powerful Ongoing effects. While it’s not surprising that Enchantress is more popular with her higher base Power, more universal coverage, and synergy with cards like Zabu and Lizard, we were surprised to see that Rogue performs poorly even in Silver Surfer decks. We’re giving her a small bump in Power to help her be a more viable tool to counter Ongoing cards.

  • Medusa
    • [Old] 2/2 – On Reveal: If this is at the middle location, +2 Power.
    • [New] 2/2 – On Reveal: If this is at the middle location, +3 Power.

Players move past many of the starter cards pretty quickly, but most of them make a comeback in a variety of later archetypes. For example, Quicksilver was in a Lockjaw deck for a while, Iron Man sees play in Thanos Ongoing and Mr. Negative, and just recently High Evolutionary brought back all the vanilla cards. Medusa however stands out as a card that sees virtually no play anywhere beyond the early stages of SNAP. Even though she’s consistently a 2/4 currently, her restriction makes her weaker than she may seem. We’re giving her a buff to allow her to better compete with other options at the 2-Cost slot.

Thanks for reading! We’re continuing to keep a close eye on the game balance, and High Evolutionary in particular. See you all next week for a new patch and the release of Conquest!

Character Spotlight: Ghost-Spider

Gwendolyn Stacy of Earth-65 web-swings into MARVEL SNAP as Ghost-Spider!

On Reveal: The last card you played moves here.

In a universe where Gwen Stacy was the one bitten by a genetically-engineered spider instead of Peter Parker, she became New York’s super heroine with arachnid-like super-powers!

Following the death of her mother, Gwen was raised alone by her father George. Her freedom-seeking artistic spirit was often at odds with her NYPD father’s brand of ethics, often leading Gwen to seek seclusion and solace by drumming alone in her room.
Over time, Gwen bonded over a shared love of music and developed a close friendship with her neighbor and fellow introvert Peter Parker. While attending Midtown High School, Gwen developed relationships with other students such as the rebel Harry Osborne and The Mary Janes — her band, which she formed with a group of schoolmates.

At this phase of life, Gwen was bitten by a radioactive spider, granting her arachnid-like powers and the means to start her career as a crimefighter! The media dubbed her: Spider-Woman.
Retired crimefighter Janet van Dyne gave Gwen web shooters and a costume fit for a spider-hero and Gwen set off to put a stop to wrongdoers in NYC!

It wasn’t long until the influence of Spider-Woman led to Gwen being blamed for the death of her close friend Peter Parker, and she was subsequently branded a criminal.
Thus, Gwen took it upon herself to avenge Peter by doubling her efforts to fight crime and redeem herself.
She became the vigilante known as Ghost-Spider.

Ghost-Spider uses her great powers responsibly to protect New York and the Web of Life — Even when the world doesn’t know about her good deeds, Gwen never gives up trying to be the best spider-hero she can be!

Gwen’s spidey-powers include Spidery Sense, Web Shooters, Superhuman Strength, and Wing Gliders. She’s an incredibly mobile hero and skilled freestyle brawler.
Ghost-Spider Gwen is represented in MARVEL SNAP through her agile ability:
