BALANCE UPDATES

This is a light week relative to the excitement of recent patches. The metagame as April ended featured a diverse metagame with healthy win rates and cube gain rates, and only a couple small popularity outliers. We’ll have more news for you soon on the future of our OTA balance patches, but today is mostly just a couple card reworks.

CARD UPDATES

  • Kitty Pryde – Released with new design!
    • [Old]1/0 – You can return this to your hand to gain +2 Power.
    • [New] 1/0 – When this returns to your hand, +2 Power. Returns at the start of each turn.

As we previously announced, Kitty Pryde will be returning to the game this week with her new ability. She’ll be Series 5 and awarded to all active accounts today.

  • Crystal
    • [Old] 4/4 – On Reveal: If this is at the middle location, shuffle your hand into your deck and draw 3 cards.
    • [New] 4/4 – On Reveal: Each player draws a card.

Crystal has been one of a handful of cards seeing incredibly low play and win rates for quite some time now, and an obvious buff candidate. We debated maintaining the direction of the current effect by removing the middle restriction, increasing the cards drawn, etc. But the tricky thing is that we don’t want an effect like Crystal’s to be strong. SNAP decks are only 12 cards and we don’t want those cards to play out the same every time, so we’re very careful about letting players draw cards. This rework aimed to make a simple, appropriate Crystal that could be fun alongside a variety of cards.

  • Wave
    • [Old] 3/3 – On Reveal:Next turn, cards in both players’ hands cost 4.
    • [New] 3/3 – On Reveal:All cards cost 4 until the end of next turn.
    • Wave’s cost reduction occurs after other effects that reduce card costs.

In addition to a text update that clarifies when Wave’s effect begins, we’ve also made a rather large adjustment “under the hood.” Wave will now begin to apply after effects that reduce card costs, rather than before. That means She-Hulk, Death, etc. will always cost 4 while Wave is in effect. We don’t take lightly that this change kills a few decks, but Wave has been far too constraining on our ability to use cost reduction as a synergy reward in future designs. Leaning on Wave is just always better than dedicating your deck to the actual synergy–we’ve seen that with Death since both cards went live, and we’ll continue seeing it without this action.

  • Death
    • [Old] 9/12 – Costs 1 less for each card destroyed this game.
    • [New] 8/12 – Costs 1 less for each card destroyed this game.

As Death’s current performance is essentially dependent on Wave and Galactus, we wanted to improve her playability in other decks now that the interaction with Wave has changed. This may not be enough, and if we see Death take a huge dive we’ll come back and look at how these values can be adjusted further to ensure Death remains a meaningful card for dedicated Destroy decks.

  • White Queen (Text-only change)
    • [Old text] 4/6 – On Reveal:Draw a copy of the highest Cost card in your opponent’s hand.
    • [New text] 4/6 – On Reveal:Copy the highest-Cost card in your opponent’s hand into your hand.

This is just a text revision to resolve some ongoing confusion about what White Queen exactly does and how it interacts with cards like Widow’s Bite. In the future, we may pursue establishing some kind of shorthand for copying a card into your hand, but for now we’re just going with the clearest expression of the card’s function.

Character Spotlight: The Living Tribunal

The almighty personification of multiversal law — The Living Tribunal joins MARVEL SNAP!

Ongoing: Split your total Power evenly among all locations.

The Living Tribunal is a vastly powerful conceptual being who has existed as long as the Multiverse itself, with the purpose of safeguarding the Multiverse from an imbalance of mystical forces. The Living Tribunal appears as a giant golden humanoid with three cloaked faces — Equity, Necessity, and Vengeance — Each represents a different personality.

The Living Tribunal often acts as an arbiter and judge of other conceptual beings, including Eternity, Infinity, Death, and Oblivion. Unlike other conceptual beings, the Living Tribunal has no counterpart in other realities — Only one Living Tribunal exists and is responsible for all judgements.
The Living Tribunal is not guided by personal motivation or desires, but is instead entirely impartial and acts in accordance with what is determined to be the greater interest of the Multiverse.

The Living Tribunal’s unique role as the bearer of cosmic order is represented in MARVEL SNAP with the effect:

Ongoing: Split your total Power evenly among all locations.

As one of the most powerful beings in the Multiverse, The Living Tribunal holds the authority to balance your Power at all locations.

The Living Tribunal can help you add Power to Sanctum Sanctorum or distribute the bonuses from Shuri’s Lab or Nidavellir where you need it most. Play him with cards like Iron Man and Ebony Maw that grant a big bonus to one location, and spread your Power far and wide!

May 25th – OTA Balance Updates

We’re back with another set of OTA balance changes! You’ll see below that we’re once again making four small adjustments to the cards, but we also have another change for our set of locations as well as an update on the future of our approach to OTAs.

CARD CHANGES

  • Black Bolt
    • [Old] 5/8 – On Reveal: Your opponent must discard the lowest-Cost card in their hand.
    • [New] 5/7 – On Reveal: Your opponent must discard the lowest-Cost card in their hand.

This one wasn’t on any of our bingo cards to start the year, but here we are. Black Bolt ascended to the top of our individual card leaderboards a couple weeks ago, and has remained there unchallenged ever since, with a frankly shocking average number of cubes won per game when drawn. However, his discard effect makes him the sort of card we don’t want topping that list. Furthermore, the deck he was fueling has also been quietly outperforming the field by a margin as high as Shuri or Thanos in their prime. While its game plan may feel more fair, it also has almost no bad matchups. Since the metagame hasn’t shifted to effectively contest this deck, we’ve decided Black Bolt’s day in the sun is over.

  • Stature
    • [Old] 5/7: Costs 1 if your opponent discarded a card from their hand this game.
    • [New] 5/6: Costs 1 if your opponent discarded a card from their hand this game.

Uh, ditto? We have seen the numbers on the Black Bolt/Stature deck soften a little bit since our Wave change, which has been most impactful by turning a good matchup into a bad one. However, it’s still clearly the best deck, and our playtesting for some future decks also indicated that this change would be merited down the line. So, we’re making it now in order to ensure we see this deck fall from its lofty perch.

  • Negasonic Teenage Warhead
    • [Old] 3/4 – After ANY card is played here, destroy this card AND that card.
    • [New] 3/5 – After ANY card is played here, destroy this card AND that card.

We hemmed and hawed a bit over whether to release Negasonic as 3/4 or 3/5 to start, and since then the data’s made it clear that we were too cautious. This change won’t make a huge difference–she often doesn’t wind up contributing her own Power to a location–but it does let her take the lead in some spots where she might previously have merely drawn, forcing your opponent to commit a card there to take it back. We did briefly debate exploring what she might look like as a 2-Cost card, but ultimately decided that might make her a little too strong as a counter to our weakest 6-Cost cards, the ones that only contest a single location.

  • Invisible Woman
    • [Old] 2/2 – Ongoing: Cards you play here are not revealed until the game ends.
    • [New] 2/3 – Ongoing: Cards you play here are not revealed until the game ends.

The majority of Invisible Woman’s play has been supporting the combo lines in Hela decks and acting as a pseudo-Cosmo to protect Ongoing-based buff decks from being single-handedly defeated by Enchantress. We believe she has the potential to be an interesting occasional player in some other decks, and this stat buff may provide her with that opportunity. We did consider the potential impact to Cerebro-2 specifically, but we’ve given that deck a couple of recent buffs and expect it may benefit from more down the line. Plus, there’s always Cerebro-3.

LOCATION CHANGES

After some internal discussion of our goals for the location pool, we’ve decided to continue adjusting some of our most restrictive locations. There are meaningful gameplay and deckbuilding benefits to having these locations, but there are also diminishing returns to having many such locations that restrict play so harshly and similarly, especially two or more appearing in the same game. So, rather than further reducing the frequency with which these locations appear, we’ve decided to thin the ranks. As of today, we’ve temporarily removed the following three locations from the game:

  • Plunder Castle
  • Milano
  • Sandbar

We’re taking them back to design, where we’ll be finding brand new effects to implement for each one. Once those are playtested and approved, we’ll reintroduce them to the game. We’re not 100% sure what that will look like yet, but you can expect to see them return in the next few months.

THE FUTURE OF OTA CHANGES

This last month has been a lot of fun for the design team! The metagame has featured a diverse spread of interesting decks, even given the recent dominance of Black Bolt/Stature. We’ve appreciated the community’s positive reaction to our OTA balance philosophy as well as the changes themselves.

With the conclusion of this May trial, we’ve decided to continue making regular OTA updates to the game, at a slightly less frequent cadence. Rather than making balance changes on all three of the weeks between patches, we’ll be taking the week in the middle off. There are two primary contributing factors to this decision: 1) putting together these updates on tight deadlines was a bit more stressful than we’d like each week, and 2) having two OTA weeks in a row always meant we got little to no insight from the first week when locking in changes for the second.

To illustrate the cadence, it’ll look like this:

  • Patch week (usually Tuesday)
  • OTA week (Thursday)
  • Off week
  • OTA week (Thursday)
  • Patch week (usually Tuesday)
  • OTA week (Thursday)

We hope you’re as excited as we are for the ongoing balance future of Marvel SNAP, and we’ll see you again on 6/8!

Character Spotlight: High Evolutionary

The brilliant Oxford-educated geneticist — turned maniacal cosmic philosopher — joins the fray in MARVEL SNAP!

At the start of the game, unlock the potential of your cards with no abilities.

Herbert Edgar Wyndham was a young scientist of great promise, who, during his doctoral studies at Oxford University, developed a controversial serum that led to his expulsion. This heretical serum held many untapped secrets to altering genetic code, and further fueled Wyndham’s desire to understand the complexities of evolution.

Following his expulsion, Wyndham used the serum and consequently transformed into the High Evolutionary — Granting him virtually unlimited knowledge and intellectual ability.

High Evolutionary then made it his mission to observe and analyze the species of the galaxy in order to create a perfect society in his vision. He established his base of operations as the Citadel of Science on Mount Wundagore, where he honed his genetic practices and created evolved anthropomorphic beings.

All the while, High Evolutionary worked under the guise of a benevolent visionary with the intent of improving lives across the galaxy. He established OrgoCorp as a front for his research and began creating a number of original species, concealing the true nature of his experiments.

In addition to his immense intellect, High Evolutionary also boasts superhuman durability capable of withstanding even the strongest attacks of the Guardians of the Galaxy. He is virtually unkillable due to his extreme longevity enabling him to heal any injuries.
High Evolutionary’s godlike genius and obsession with evolution is portrayed in MARVEL SNAP by his ability to unlock the potential of your cards with no abilities!

There are 7 iconic characters granted new effects by the potential-unlocking ability of High Evolutionary:

  • Evolved Wasp: On Reveal: Afflict 2 random enemy cards here with -1 Power.
  • Evolved Misty Knight: When you end a turn with unspent Energy, give another friendly card +1 Power.
  • Evolved Shocker: On Reveal: Give the leftmost card in your hand -1 Cost.
  • Evolved Cyclops: When you end a turn with unspent Energy, afflict 2 random enemies here with -1 Power.
  • Evolved The Thing: On Reveal: Afflict a random enemy card here with -1 Power. Repeat this twice more.
  • Evolved Abomination: Costs 1 less for each enemy card in play that’s afflicted with negative Power.
  • Evolved Hulk: Ongoing: +2 Power for each turn you ended with unspent Energy.

OH SNAP! These new abilities are snazzy!

Evolved characters play well together as a package with High Evolutionary, since they each benefit from two key game mechanics — Ending turns with unspent Energy & enemy Power reduction.

The new and improved Evolved Cyclops, for example, afflicts 2 random enemies at the Location he occupies with -1 Power, each time you end your turn with unspent Energy. Evolved Cyclops can really rack up the potency of both Evolved Abomination and Evolved Hulk, who benefit from Power reduction and unspent Energy respectively.
High Evolutionary’s evolved species also pair nicely with other Power reduction and unspent Energy lovers — Namely Spider-Woman, Scorpion, Sunspot, and She-Hulk.
Try different combinations of evolved characters in various deck archetypes, or go all-in on High Evolutionary’s vision and combine them all for ultimate synergy!

He may be a little crazy… Some would even say downright evil — But we’ll give him a pass because his powerful abilities are just too cool to pass up! Let’s welcome High Evolutionary to MARVEL SNAP!!

Card Acquisition Updates

The next few months are going to be truly epic for MARVEL SNAP! We have a new mode coming next month called Conquest, MARVEL SNAP on Windows continues to get polished and prepared for its global launch, and lastly, we’re dreaming up ways of improving the fun of getting new cards.

We’ve seen a lot of questions and feedback about how we introduce new cards to MARVEL SNAP. With our next patch on the horizon, we’d like to share some updates about our plans to improve how you acquire new cards. Our goal over the next few months is to find ways for more people to get the chance to play with new cards, more often.

Flexible Series Release

We’ve heard many players express that releasing every new card in Series 5 is interfering with their ability to get excited about those releases. We don’t want you to feel pressured to wait for Series Drops in order to enjoy that content, and we’d like you to be able to play with more new cards each month. Our goal is to make all new card releases feel exciting, accessible, and impactful in MARVEL SNAP. In our future seasons, we’ll be experimenting with releasing some cards directly to Series 4 – starting with two cards released to Series 4 in June. We believe releasing some cards at lower Token cost will increase accessibility and excitement for new cards released each week. We’ll be listening to your feedback to find the right balance between Series 5 versus Series 4 card releases.

Flexible Series Drop

In addition to modifying the Release Series for some cards, we’ll also be taking a look at the Series Drop cadence for cards. Currently all cards are on the same schedule starting in Series 5, dropping to Series 4 and eventually Series 3. However, the reality is that not all cards are created equally appealing to players. Going forward, we’re going to exercise more flexibility in what cards drop series and when. Sometimes this means preserving the Series of a card, as is the case with Thanos and Galactus. Other times this means we may drop a card from Series 5 to Series 3 because we simply want more people to experiment with it. We may even skip a monthly series drop entirely when the meta looks fun and healthy. These decisions will be made on a card-by-card basis based on data and player feedback instead of applying a blanket rule to all cards.

In our upcoming patch, we’re dropping more cards into Series 3 than we ever have before. In addition, some of our more impactful cards are staying in their current series for longer than expected. There are some fun cards in this drop and we hope they inspire you to experiment with new decks!

  • Cards dropping from Series 5 to Series 4:
    • Master Mold
    • Negasonic
    • Nimrod
  • Cards staying in Series 4:
    • Darkhawk
    • Knull
    • Shanna
    • Stature
    • Zabu
    • MODOK
  • Cards dropping from Series 4 to Series 3:
    • Sentry
    • Silver Surfer
    • Dazzler
    • Shadow King
    • Sauron
    • Ghost

Series 3 Card Acquisition

In a previous patch, we made a few changes for Series 3 players that greatly increased their Token earn rate and introduced the free, seasonal Choose Your Card section. This made new card releases more accessible to these players and ultimately resulted in more cards being collected, but we’ve heard feedback that some players would still like the flexibility to use Tokens for Series 3 cards. In addition to the Choose Your Card section, we’re adding a new way to collect Series 3 cards. In our June patch, we’re updating the Token Shop to include a new section: Series 3 Mystery Card. This option will be available for 1,000 Tokens and can be purchased anytime you have enough Tokens and unowned Series 3 cards.

More Ways to Earn Tokens

Over the last couple of months, we’ve been making adjustments to increase the rate players are able to acquire Tokens. We think there are more improvements to be made here. In the next few patches, we’ll be introducing a couple more features that will reward more Tokens to more players. Our goal is that with these new features increasing the flow of Tokens, players will be able to purchase more new cards, more frequently! The first of these new features will be Weekend Missions.

Weekend Missions: Weekend Missions offer more goals and rewards for players, beyond their current Daily Missions and Weekly Missions. With the initial release of this feature, each weekend will have three Weekend Missions:

  • Win Games to Earn Credits
  • Win Games with Season Pass Card to Earn Gold
  • Win Games with Newly Released Card to Earn Tokens

Each of these reward amounts will vary depending on the difficulty of the mission. There will be Weekly Missions available for each new card release. Weekly Missions for a Newly Released Card are a great way to earn back Tokens with your new cards – essentially reducing the overall Token cost!

Thank you for all your feedback and patience as we’re continuing to make updates to MARVEL SNAP. We hope to make a game that we can all play together for years to come!

Character Spotlight: Howard The Duck

He’s an ill-tempered anthropomorphic Duck from Duckworld who became a private eye on Earth.
Need any more really be said?

“We can do this the wrong way… or my way!”

—Howard The Duck

Employ Howard as your personal MARVEL SNAP private eye to see what your deck has in store next.

May 11th – Balance Updates

Another week, another OTA balance patch! In addition to 4 new card updates, we have some location frequency updates this week! Let’s get right into it:

  • Drax
    • [Old] 4/5 – On Reveal: If your opponent played a card here this turn, +3 Power.
    • [New] 4/6 – On Reveal: If your opponent played a card here this turn, +2 Power.

The Guardians can create some of the most exciting gameplay in SNAP with their predictive playstyle. While they’ve been doing better with the release of Nebula, they’re still performing poorly overall at the moment. Out of all the Guardians, Drax stood out to us as the clearest buff candidate. Compared to other cards like Rockslide and White Queen with good stats and a guaranteed upside, Drax had below average stats for a very inconsistent upside. We’re giving him a small buff by moving some of his Power from his ability to his base stats to improve his baseline performance.

  • Rockslide
    • [Old] 4/6 – On Reveal: Shuffle 2 Rocks into your opponent’s deck.
    • [New] 4/5 – On Reveal: Shuffle 2 Rocks into your opponent’s deck.

Rockslide’s viability took a leap forward with the release of Darkhawk and Zabu, so it’s easy to look at this nerf and assume that we’re targeting Darkhawk by weakening one of his support cards. And sure, you’d be right–Darkhawk has been one of the 10 winningest cards in the game since release and featured in multiple strong decks. In fact, Rockslide often mirrors (or improves upon) Darkhawk’s stats, as they’re both in the top-performing “DinoHawk” deck. Since Rockslide’s easier to adjust, we’re making this tweak with the aim of weakening that deck slightly.

  • Enchantress
    • [Old] 4/6 – On Reveal: Remove the abilities from all Ongoing cards at this location.
    • [New] 4/5 – On Reveal: Remove the abilities from all Ongoing cards at this location.

Enchantress has grown in popularity since our buff to her two weeks ago, which was expected. While we’re excited by how much more she’s affecting the meta, she’s become one of the most played cards in the game, which is a bit over a mark. We’re optimistic that a small nerf to 4/5 will put her in a good position going forward. But hey, it was fun while it lasted!

  • Venom
    • [Old] 3/1 – On Reveal: Destroy your other cards at this location. Add their Power to this card.
    • [New] 3/3 – On Reveal: Destroy your other cards at this location. Add their Power to this card.

Venom has been the worst destroy enabler for a while now, averaging lower Power in destroy decks than his peers Deathlock and Carnage. While he’s seen fringe usage in decks with Taskmaster, we haven’t seen any of them really take off. We’d like to give one of Marvel’s most iconic anti-heroes space to shine, so we’re feeding him a hearty +2 Power buff.

Bonus OTA: Location, Location, Location

As our library of locations increases, we’ll be making ongoing adjustments to hit the sweet spot we like for dynamic games. To that end, we’re reducing the appearance weights on a few of our existing locations, which means they’ll show up less frequently in your games. It’s unlikely you’ll consciously observe these changes, but we thought you’d like to know.

  • Attilan
  • Krakoa
  • Lechuguilla
  • Morag
  • Plunder Castle
  • Sanctum Sanctorum
  • Subterranea

That’s all for now, thanks for stopping by! This is the second to last week of our OTA trial period, with a full-sized patch coming next week and the final May OTA coming on 5/25. While we’re not yet set on a plan going forward, we know that we want to continue doing regular OTA balance updates, just at longer intervals between changes. We’ll let you know when we have more to share!

Kitty Pryde Update

The recent release of Kitty Pryde didn’t go according to plan and we’ll be compensating all players to thank you for your patience during this process. Shortly after the card was enabled on live servers, we saw reports of some game-breaking issues. We disabled the card from being played in any matches, purchased in the Token Shop, or collected from the Collection Level Track until we could find a solution.

Since then, we’ve been exploring fixes for Kitty Pryde’s multiple issues. However we’ve found that in order to do so, it would involve fundamental changes to our current game engine. Instead of modifying the entire game’s ruleset or rereleasing a partially-bugged card, we’re reworking Kitty’s design to satisfy her existing gameplay synergies and goals in a simpler way.

Previous Design – Kitty Pryde:
[1/0] You can return this to your hand to gain +2 Power.
New Design – Kitty Pryde:
[1/0] When this returns to your hand, +2 Power. Returns at the start of each turn.

We need a bit more testing time to verify that everything is functioning as expected. Kitty Pryde will be returning to the game in our May patch, approximately four weeks from tomorrow. We recognize that this has been a frustrating experience for everyone, especially for players that purchased Kitty Pryde before she was disabled and haven’t had access to 6,000 Tokens.

To apologize for the inconvenience, we’re taking the following steps as compensation:

  • Later this week, current Kitty Pryde owners will receive:
    • 8,000 Tokens
    • Kitty Pryde Base Avatar
  • In the May patch, ALL players will receive the reworked Kitty Pryde for FREE

We thank you for your patience as we have worked through issues with Kitty Pryde. The integrity of our card releases is important and must hit an acceptable bar that creates trust. We learned a lot through this process and will improve the quality of future releases. We are excited for Kitty Pryde’s return and look forward to seeing new decks with her included!

Character Spotlight: Iron Lad

MARVEL SNAP welcomes the psychokinetic armored, teenage version of Kang the Conqueror — Known as Iron Lad!

On Reveal: Copy the text of your deck’s top card.

In 3016, on an alternate Earth known as Other-Earth, high school robotics student Nathaniel Richards was rescued from malicious bullies by a time-travelling entity who introduced himself as Kang the Conqueror. It turns out, that Kang was attempting to save his younger self from a very painful experience in which he had been ruthlessly stabbed by bullies and hospitalized for many years as a teen. He outfitted young Nathaniel with a suit of psychokinetic armor that responded to his thoughts and gave him a glimpse into his future as a conqueror.

Horrified at what he would become, Nathaniel used the armor to flee to modern day Earth (616 reality) with a mission to find the Avengers and take down his future self.

From then on, he dubbed himself “Iron Lad,” and learned to control this newfound robotic technology — which granted him not only the powers of flight and superhuman strength, but also the ability to shape his thoughts and appearance, hack computer systems, create magnetic fields, and travel through time.

Iron Lad’s incredible abilities are demonstrated in MARVEL SNAP by his unique effect:
