MARVEL SNAP: What’s Next?

Hey, welcome to our first development roadmap update for 2023! We’ve been having a blast exploring the Savage Land, Quantum Realm, and time-traveling to the… Past? Future? We’re not sure. We’ve had some great seasons, launched a BUNCH of new Series 5 cards, balanced some metagames, and some of us even got to Infinite Rank. Whoa. But, we’re ready to talk about what’s next for MARVEL SNAP!

COMING SOON

Items listed here are in the final phase of development, and these features are almost ready to release to players! We’re cleaning up, polishing art, and squashing bugs. Our Quality Assurance teams scrape over all the little details to ensure we have as smooth an experience for players as possible. Once features are “Coming Soon,” we can start to plan release dates, timelines and share some insight with players.

The team is hard at work putting the finishing touches on a few much-anticipated features:

  • New Competitive Mode – Conquest
  • Card Acquisition Improvements
  • Token Shop Revamp
  • Ranked Mode Improvements
  • Infinite Rank Revamp

What is Conquest?

Conquest takes the Battle Mode format you know and love from Friendly Battles to the next level! In Conquest, players will queue up against other players to face-off in Battle Mode to earn rewards. Winning a series of battles without a loss unlocks tickets to higher leagues against tougher opponents… culminating with Infinity league at the end of each season. Players will battle their way to the top to claim ultimate victory – and the best rewards.

When you queue up for a Conquest match, you’ll start by choosing which league to compete: Proving Grounds, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Vibranium, or Infinite. Proving Grounds is always available to play, but players need the corresponding ticket to access higher tiers. Tickets are earned by winning a league series in the previous tier – for example: winning your Silver series will earn you a Gold Ticket. Players win a league series by defeating three consecutive opponents.

In addition to Tickets for higher leagues, each victory grants Medals that can be used in the Conquest Shop to unlock exclusive rewards. There’s a brand new Conquest Shop every season with new cosmetics, including a seasonal exclusive variant that can only be unlocked in the Conquest Shop.

We think that Battle Mode is a super fun way to play MARVEL SNAP and Conquest lets you play Battle Mode whenever you want, against the best competition, for the best rewards! The team is actively developing Conquest and we ran our first company-wide playtest last week. We’re hoping to release Conquest in June!

Card Acquisition Improvements

Every new card released in MARVEL SNAP should be exciting and impactful. We want players to wonder how that card could unlock new possibilities for fun or to win matches–and be able to actually play out those dreams. We’ve heard your feedback that we’re not meeting these expectations right now. It’s time to change that! We’re increasing the rate that all players earn Tokens, including a huge boost for Series 3 players that brings them in-line with Series 4/5 players. These changes will give all players equal opportunities to unlock brand new cards for themselves–whether you’re in Series 3 or beyond.

  • More Tokens: We’re increasing the amount of Tokens earned on the Collection Level Track for all players who have not yet collected all Series 4 and Series 5 Cards. Starting at Collection Level 500 players will be able to earn between 200-600 tokens in Collector’s Caches and Collector’s Reserves regardless of whether they have completed Series 3 or not. This is an increase of 4X for players who have not yet completed Series 3! Once a Card Series is complete, caches that would have contained a card from that Series will now be replaced with 100 Tokens. All of these changes will result in more tokens for more people!
  • Choose Your Card: Series 3 cards now have their own section in the Shop! Once per season players who haven’t completed Series 3 will be able to claim one free Series 3 card to help them fill out their favorite deck and take a step closer to completing their collection. Now you can save your tokens for Series 4 and 5 cards!

You don’t need to wait long for these updates, both of these changes will be in our next patch!

Token Shop Revamp

Token Shop is an awesome way to target the cards you want most, but we think we can do it even better. We’re dividing the Token Shop into a few different sections that will allow players to target  new and desirable cards faster. We’re also revamping the look and feel of the Token Shop so you can swipe through to see what’s new.

  • Weekly Spotlight: When a new Series 5 card is released, it will be immediately featured in its own section for its first week in MARVEL SNAP. Once you buy the Weekly Spotlight card, this section will be hidden until the next new card is released. If you want the newest cards at release, here’s what you’ve been waiting for!
  • Series 4 & Series 5: This section functions nearly the same as previously, but only features Series 4 and Series 5 cards. This section will feature a card you don’t own from all currently available Series 4/5 cards and rotates every 8 hours. Series 5 cards will be added to this section once they leave the Weekly Spotlight.
  • Ultimate Variants: Ultimate Variants are some of the most epic variants in the game. We felt they deserved their own section too!  We’re moving Ultimate Variants out of the way of seeing Series 4 and 5 cards and into their own rotation for those of you who want to make your decks that much cooler.

We’re aiming for these changes to make our April patch!

Ranked Mode Improvements

We’ve been hearing your feedback about Ranked Mode and we agree it’s time to make some changes. Ranked Mode is a tough feature to get right and we want to find the right balance through some additional iteration. We’re making a few updates before our next season that will address issues with some players feeling unable to progress or players that feel they are not facing worthy opponents.

  • Matchmaking Algorithm: We’re improving our matchmaking algorithm to create higher quality matches for all players–including an update that will prevent players from matching against an opponent more than 30 ranks away.
  • Infinite MMR Floor: When someone reaches Infinite Rank, we’ll take a snapshot of their MMR (Matchmaking Rating). For the rest of the season, their MMR cannot fall below that value. This change is to address players that could intentionally lose many games at the Infinite Rank floor to drop their MMR for the next season. You’ll still be able to increase your MMR while playing in Infinite Rank.
  • Infinite vs Infinite Matchmaking: Players that reach Infinite Rank will only match against other Infinite Rank players.

We know there’s more work to be done. We think the current journey to re-climb to a previous season’s rank is too difficult. To that end, we are exploring changes to how many cubes are required per rank, how many bonus cubes are granted when a player achieves a new Tier, and potentially how much of a reset is incurred each season. These numbers are actively being crunched right now, so we don’t have more details to share, but rest assured, our goal is to deliver a satisfying seasonal experience for players who wish to get better at the game, and see their rank increase as a result.

We’ve also seen a lot of feedback around matching by MMR and why we don’t simply match by Rank. The team has been weighing the positives and negatives of both these options. In a pure match-by-rank situation, it can lead to an awful start-of-season experience, as players are matching up against opponents who are far superior to them. However, we are exploring alternate ways of matchmaking to try to deliver a more satisfying overall experience, as there are some upsides to matching-by-rank. We have some ideas that we think can capture the best of both worlds, and will be trying out updates to the matchmaker in future seasons. We’ll absolutely be sharing more as we lock in details–you’ll hear more from us soon!

Infinite Rank Revamp

For most of us, the climb to Infinite Rank has been our peak achievement… and we have great news! We’re completely revamping Infinite Rank so your experience doesn’t end at Infinite – it’s just the beginning! We want to create an exciting and fair battleground for our most skilled players to compete on the Infinite Rank Leaderboard. Once players reach Infinite Rank, they are separated into their own ecosystem that will highlight two important numbers:

  • Skill Rating Score: This score is your personal skill rating score; it’s similar to your matchmaking rating. You’ll be able to see how your skill rating score changes after each match. If you’re more interested in increasing your personal skill from season to season, this is the number for you.
  • Leaderboard Rank: Your friend has always claimed that they’re the Best MARVEL SNAP Player – well, now we’ll find out. This is the leaderboard number based on the ranking order of each Infinite player’s skill rating score.

We’re fine-tuning the experience and visuals for the new Infinite Rank ecosystem and currently scoping out the work, but we’re hoping to release it as soon as possible! More details on timing soon!

IN DEVELOPMENT

Game features in this section are actively being developed, iterated, and improved upon. Our production team dedicates team resources, generates tasks/timelines, and ensures we’re moving forward. Features and systems in this bucket can change dramatically – we might find our initial idea wasn’t fun OR we might discover we can achieve our goals in an unexpected way!

Here’s some features that are currently in development:

  • PC Widescreen UI
  • Smart Decks
  • Avatars & Titles by Deck
  • Personalized Shop
  • Global Matchmaking

IN CONCEPT

We have BIG dreams about what we’d like to bring to the future of MARVEL SNAP! The first step towards these dreams is turning ideas into concepts through discussion, documentation, and planning. Features currently in the “In Concept” phase have been initially scoped out and given shape but have not yet had any engineering or development work done in the game itself.

This is where we’d love your feedback the most! Concepts listed in this section may be elevated in priority, rescoped, or scrapped entirely… or we might hear something completely new from the community!

Here are some of the future concepts we’re thinking about for MARVEL SNAP:

  • Guilds (Social Systems)
  • Collectible Emotes & Card Emojis
  • Mythic Variants
  • PC Controller Support
  • Seasonal Audio
  • Test Deck Mode

Test Deck Mode

Where’s Unranked Mode? What’s this Test Deck Mode?! We know that players want a quick-and-easy way to try out new decks or strategies. Since before Global Launch, we’ve been talking about the idea of Unranked Mode as a solution to this problem. But, as we explored this feature, we found that Unranked Mode comes with some not so great additional challenges. So, we set out to reimagine what this feature could be and Test Deck Mode evolved from there!  We’re considering adding a button to the deck editing screen that will let you instantly hop into a low-stakes game against the computer. We’re still in early stages of concepting here, but we’d love to hear your thoughts on this new path.

Hopefully that provides some extra insight on what the teams been working on and thinking about. Let us know what you think, and please continue to share your ideas for the future of MARVEL SNAP!

Character Spotlight: Nimrod

MARVEL SNAP welcomes the gigantic mutant-killing machine… Nimrod.

When this is destroyed, add a copy to each other location.

Standing at a whopping 9’10” and 550 lbs, named after the “mighty hunter” of the same name — Nimrod lives up to his title as an ultra-capable hunter of superhumans and the epitome of Sentinel technology.

In the Days of Future Past timeline, Sentinels rule North America and employ Nimrod to maintain dominance over any mutants that would defy them. Nimrod is constructed of highly durable material which resists damage even from superhumans, and is equipped with an adaptable weapons system which can emit ultra-powerful energy blasts, project forcefields, move objects, disintegrate matter, and teleport at will.

As if all that wasn’t enough to make Nimrod an imposing force… He also possesses an extremely advanced artificial intelligence which makes him capable of critical thinking and adapting to an array of combat situations. Nimrod has superhuman sensors in his arms and head which enable him to detect and analyze beings’ extraordinary powers and determine modifications that should be made to his own abilities. He is thereby capable of counteracting most abilities and can potentially learn to defeat any opponent.

In MARVEL SNAP, Nimrod is characterized by his extreme mechanical durability and adaptability through his trait:

When this is destroyed, add a copy to each other location.

Nimrod works especially well with Destroy-synergizing characters such as Deathlok, Venom, Destroyer, Galactus, and Knull.

Will you ally with the X-Men in rising up against their pink nemesis, or will you side with the Sentinels and embrace this post-apocalyptic future?

Card Spotlight: Kang the Conqueror

MARVEL SNAP welcomes the time-traveling mastermind himself — Kang the Conqueror.

On Reveal: Look at what your opponent did, then restart the turn. (without Kang)

Kang is a time-traveling entity known for his futuristic weapons, iconic blue-faced mask, and desire to conquer all of time. He takes many forms throughout the past, present, and future — including Pharaoh Rama-Tut, Immortus, and Iron Lad.

Before becoming known as “Kang,” Nathaniel Richards was a young scholar fascinated with the history of ancient Egypt and his apparent connection to the Richards’ Fantastic bloodline and Doctor Victor Von Doom. This led Nathaniel to discovering Doctor Doom’s time travel secrets which he used to conquer the past and the future.

Kang has no superhuman abilities, but is powerful nonetheless, due to his extraordinary genius and mastery of 40th century technology. He is armed with highly advanced battle armor that enhances his strength and is capable of energy, hologram, and force-field projection, as well as controlling other forms of technology.

In-game, Kang has an incredible time-warp ability which allows you to first see your opponent’s turn play out, and then rewind time to the beginning of the turn! There are endless possibilities for mindgames when including Kang the Conqueror in your deck — Hobgoblin, Aero, and Professor X stand out as some of the most impactful cards to play alongside Kang.

Kang the Conqueror lives to surmount the competition — whether it be The Avengers, the Fantastic Four, or your opponents in MARVEL SNAP.

Patch Notes – February 21, 2023

PLEASE NOTE: If you haven’t updated your game yet, get the latest in the app store!

GENERAL UPDATES

  • Some cards have gone from Series 5 to Series 4 and from Series 4 to Series 3
    • Series 5 to 4:
      • Silver Surfer
      • Knull
      • Darkhawk
      • Sentry
    • Series 4 to 3:
      • Agent Coulson
      • Maria Hill
      • Helicarrier
  • Series 5 and Series 4 now have shared rotation protection in the Token Shop
  • Added a confirmation dialog when purchasing Season Pass levels
  • Tapping the Credits or Gold icons at the top of the screen will navigate to the Shop.

ART & VISUAL EFFECTS

  • Made Onslaught VFX faster (especially for Bar Sinister)
  • Added additional VFX to the location affected by Klaw’s ability
  • Added a notification for when you try and discard while your hand is empty
  • Added animation for Rickety Bridge location
  • Mysterio’s Illusions will now use your Mysterio’s variant

CARD UPDATES

  • Darkhawk: 4/1 -> 4/0
  • Dev Comment: Darkhawk is an especially powerful card. As we prepared this balance change before the Silver Surfer and Zabu nerfs went live, we didn’t want to hit him too hard. However, we definitely felt that knocking off at least one Power from him is warranted, and we will continue to monitor his performance.
  • Thanos: 6/8 -> 6/11
  • Dev Comment: We think Thanos is one of the coolest cards, and we’re a bit sad that he himself isn’t played often. Most Thanos decks focus primarily on making good use of the stones, but we want to make sure the mad titan himself has enough Power to play.
  • Sandman: 4/1 -> 5/5
  • Dev Comment: Many of the strongest decks right now have strategies centered around playing multiple cards on turn 6. Sandman should be a good answer to these decks, but he didn’t quite have the sand to stand up to them with his previous statline. We’re giving him a bit more Power to make him a more competitive card, but also subsequently bumping up his Cost.
  • Dev Comment: The cards below are rather weak at the moment, so we’re giving them a small buff to help them perform a bit better.
    • Spider-Woman: 5/7 -> 5/8
    • Namor: 4/5 -> 4/6
    • Dagger: 2/1 -> 2/2
  • Text-Only Update to Yondu: Destroy the top card of your opponent’s deck
  • Dev Comment: Yondu’s text now accurately describes his effect. Please remember that most triggered and Ongoing effects are not active while a card is still in your deck, so despite the word “Destroy”, Yondu can remove Colossus and Wolverine with impunity.
  • Text-Only Update: As an ongoing effort to improve card and location text, we’ve adjusted everything that currently says “When you play a card” to say “After you play a card” instead. We hope this makes it clearer that these abilities trigger once a card has been fully played, including its On Reveal effects. None of these are functional changes.
    • Angela
    • Bishop
    • Iron Fist
    • Lockjaw
    • Titania

LOCATION UPDATES

  • Sakaar: After this turn, put a card from each player’s hand here.
  • Sakaar has a lot of weird interactions with cards like Storm and Wave as a consequence of revealing a card mid-turn. While we’re sad to lose the exciting moment of Sakaar revealing, we want to avoid these confusing interactions going forward. We think this design will also open up some interesting interaction points in the early game.
    • As a note, Sakaar in the introductory missions will retain the old effect.
  • Text-Only Update: As noted in Card Updates, the following locations are being revised to use “After” instead of “When” for triggers related to playing a card. None of these are functional changes.
    • Altar of Death
    • Bar Sinister
    • Cloning Vats
    • Danger Room
    • Death’s Domain
    • Lechuguilla
    • Luke’s Bar
    • Machineworld
    • Orchis Forge
    • Quantum Tunnel
    • Shuri’s Lab
    • Sinister London
    • Vibranium Mines
    • Vormir
  • Adjusted the cost of Klyntar’s Symbiote from 1 to 4.

  • Fix to Isle of Silence for cards that are not marked Ongoing in text
  • Fixed a layout problem that caused a gap between the in-game Player and Opponent Avatar and the Player and Opponent Info pop-up
  • Quickly tapping to get premium Season Pass multiple times will no longer cause the game to be stuck.
  • Many art fixes over a variety of cards and variants.
  • The Steam client should now use current language as the initial locale
  • Having 3 or 4 custom searches no longer causes the UI elements in the Filter menu to clip into each other.
  • Search & filter menus no longer clip under the notch at the top of iOS devices.
  • The Player Name change icon is no longer squished on certain devices.
  • Fixed the font size for some languages for the header text on the new season’s Welcome splash screen.
  • Fixed an issue where you could purchase the wrong item from the token shop if you purchased just as the shop rolled over.
  • It is no longer possible to enter nothing but spaces as a profile name.
  • Added a ‘no connection’ warning to the main splash screen.

KNOWN ISSUES LIST

  • The close UI button is too low in the name change UI.
  • Claimed UI appears overlapping the Season Cache icons.
  • Opponent names clip slightly into the avatar on the matchmaking screen.

  • The player rename timer does not update dynamically.
  • Variant and split cards can be shown in the Deck Edit mode.
  • Recruit Season Pass spotlight card shows the “Variant” label.
  • Spotlight cards in the Season Pass can only be focused by tapping the lower-left section of the card.

Balance Update – February 8, 2023

MARVEL SNAP is making balance changes today to two cards. Second Dinner game designer, Glenn Jones, shares behind-the-scenes insights on how our team thinks about making changes to cards.

Balance Update: Zabu and Silver Surfer

Today’s balance changes mark our first “over the air” change to card content without using a patch. Many of you may be wondering why we’re taking this action, so I’m going to walk you through some of our balance philosophy, the metrics that led to these changes, and the adjustments we’re making to Zabu and Silver Surfer.

Why Do We Balance?

MARVEL SNAP’s content release model gives our metagame a unique texture. By releasing a new card each week, we hope to constantly provide something new and exciting to look forward to for players. That requires a diverse metagame featuring opportunity for innovation and exploration. This game is at its most fun with a large variety of viable decks featuring many different cards. It’s awesome to see individual cards succeed, but we need that success to exist within a spectrum that also allows many other cards to flourish.

Balancing Act

Let’s talk about our general process for balancing SNAP. Every week, our design group looks at metrics for both individual cards and “clusters,” the groups of cards that most commonly make up various decks.

  • For individual cards, we focus on win percentage when drawn, popularity, and cube contribution, the number of cubes a card yields.
  • For clusters, we focus on win percentage against the field, average cubes per game, the percentage of all games using that cluster, and its matchups.

Each of these values has tolerances, and that’s what determines whether we make a balance change. Exceeding one tolerance doesn’t mandate a buff or a nerf, but it does build the “watchlist” you may have heard about. When a card goes on watch, we discuss potential changes and begin playtesting them, just in case. If things don’t improve on the live game, that’s when we’ll make the change.

But which change to make? Our goal is to find a version of each card that makes the game more fun, not just turn strong cards into weak ones. If one of our adjustments prevents too many players from enjoying their card, we’ll revisit it later.

Card Changes

Weakening these two Season Pass cards wasn’t a light decision. It’s paramount that we protect our gameplay, but our team also takes seriously that players trust us to be responsible stewards of that content. These changes aren’t meant to “delete” Zabu or SIlver Surfer–just give other cards more room.

Zabu

Zabu’s individual card performance was strong, but not amazing. It didn’t crack our Top 5 cards for most of January, which is usually where you find troublemakers. Zabu’s dominance only became apparent in evaluating its clusters, which is data that takes longer to surface. In mid-January we saw three distinct Zabu decks gaining steam near the top of our rankings on winrate, cube gain, and population. That was when we knew a change would be necessary, but the next patch was already locked, which brings us to today.

  • 3/2 – Ongoing: Your 4-Cost cards cost 2 less. (minimum 1)
  • ->
  • 2/2 – Ongoing: Your 4-Cost cards cost 1 less. (minimum 1)

Moving Zabu’s cost reduction from 2 to 1 reduces the potential Energy reduction of the cat, making it harder to hide game-winning amounts of Power until turn 6 or empty your hand for Dracula. It also breaks up the Spider-Man/Absorbing Man combo, which was stronger than we’d like. Sliding him down to 2-Cost hopefully refunds enough tempo to retain the fun of building around various 4-Cost cards. We expect Zabu decks to look a bit different, but still have competitive builds.

Silver Surfer

Silver Surfer’s change is oddly linked to Zabu’s. It’s been a Top 5 card in a Top 5 deck since release, but steadied and gained cubes slower once players adapted . . . until Zabu. During Savage Lands, “Sera Surfer” was an unlikely hero and the best overall deck. However, it also had positive matchups against over 75% of the field, which meant it threatened to become too dominant once we adjusted Zabu.

  • 3/0 – On Reveal: Give your other 3-Cost cards +3 Power.
  • ->
  • 3/2 – On Reveal: Give your other 3-Cost cards +2 Power.

This change aims to keep mostly the same Surfer decks viable, just weaker. We’re specifically happy to carry Power on Surfer himself, because it makes figuring out where he’ll be played more interesting for both players and lets us fine-tune his strength. Those gains unfortunately come at the expense of some cool Mister Negative decks we enjoyed seeing.

Future Balance Changes

For now, we still expect patches to be the primary way to deliver balance changes. Our internal processes aren’t designed to do these impromptu changes regularly yet, and we’ll often want to make more substantial changes than this tool allows. However, we may experiment with slightly more frequent balance on a small scale, to see if there’s an even better experience for players at our fingertips. Thanks for reading, and good luck on your next snap!

GOOD VS BAD: One player builds a deck with only Super Heroes, and the other builds a deck with only Super Villains. Caution: Debates about what deck Deadpool belongs in have been known to end friendships.

BEAST MODE: Only Animal (and Beast) cards are allowed. Careful not to upset Rocket Raccoon.

WEIRDWORLD MODE: Build a deck for your opponent.
