Balance Update – February 8, 2023

MARVEL SNAP is making balance changes today to two cards. Second Dinner game designer, Glenn Jones, shares behind-the-scenes insights on how our team thinks about making changes to cards.

Balance Update: Zabu and Silver Surfer

Today’s balance changes mark our first “over the air” change to card content without using a patch. Many of you may be wondering why we’re taking this action, so I’m going to walk you through some of our balance philosophy, the metrics that led to these changes, and the adjustments we’re making to Zabu and Silver Surfer.

Why Do We Balance?

MARVEL SNAP’s content release model gives our metagame a unique texture. By releasing a new card each week, we hope to constantly provide something new and exciting to look forward to for players. That requires a diverse metagame featuring opportunity for innovation and exploration. This game is at its most fun with a large variety of viable decks featuring many different cards. It’s awesome to see individual cards succeed, but we need that success to exist within a spectrum that also allows many other cards to flourish.

Balancing Act

Let’s talk about our general process for balancing SNAP. Every week, our design group looks at metrics for both individual cards and “clusters,” the groups of cards that most commonly make up various decks.

  • For individual cards, we focus on win percentage when drawn, popularity, and cube contribution, the number of cubes a card yields.
  • For clusters, we focus on win percentage against the field, average cubes per game, the percentage of all games using that cluster, and its matchups.

Each of these values has tolerances, and that’s what determines whether we make a balance change. Exceeding one tolerance doesn’t mandate a buff or a nerf, but it does build the “watchlist” you may have heard about. When a card goes on watch, we discuss potential changes and begin playtesting them, just in case. If things don’t improve on the live game, that’s when we’ll make the change.

But which change to make? Our goal is to find a version of each card that makes the game more fun, not just turn strong cards into weak ones. If one of our adjustments prevents too many players from enjoying their card, we’ll revisit it later.

Card Changes

Weakening these two Season Pass cards wasn’t a light decision. It’s paramount that we protect our gameplay, but our team also takes seriously that players trust us to be responsible stewards of that content. These changes aren’t meant to “delete” Zabu or SIlver Surfer–just give other cards more room.

Zabu

Zabu’s individual card performance was strong, but not amazing. It didn’t crack our Top 5 cards for most of January, which is usually where you find troublemakers. Zabu’s dominance only became apparent in evaluating its clusters, which is data that takes longer to surface. In mid-January we saw three distinct Zabu decks gaining steam near the top of our rankings on winrate, cube gain, and population. That was when we knew a change would be necessary, but the next patch was already locked, which brings us to today.

  • 3/2 – Ongoing: Your 4-Cost cards cost 2 less. (minimum 1)
  • ->
  • 2/2 – Ongoing: Your 4-Cost cards cost 1 less. (minimum 1)

Moving Zabu’s cost reduction from 2 to 1 reduces the potential Energy reduction of the cat, making it harder to hide game-winning amounts of Power until turn 6 or empty your hand for Dracula. It also breaks up the Spider-Man/Absorbing Man combo, which was stronger than we’d like. Sliding him down to 2-Cost hopefully refunds enough tempo to retain the fun of building around various 4-Cost cards. We expect Zabu decks to look a bit different, but still have competitive builds.

Silver Surfer

Silver Surfer’s change is oddly linked to Zabu’s. It’s been a Top 5 card in a Top 5 deck since release, but steadied and gained cubes slower once players adapted . . . until Zabu. During Savage Lands, “Sera Surfer” was an unlikely hero and the best overall deck. However, it also had positive matchups against over 75% of the field, which meant it threatened to become too dominant once we adjusted Zabu.

  • 3/0 – On Reveal: Give your other 3-Cost cards +3 Power.
  • ->
  • 3/2 – On Reveal: Give your other 3-Cost cards +2 Power.

This change aims to keep mostly the same Surfer decks viable, just weaker. We’re specifically happy to carry Power on Surfer himself, because it makes figuring out where he’ll be played more interesting for both players and lets us fine-tune his strength. Those gains unfortunately come at the expense of some cool Mister Negative decks we enjoyed seeing.

Future Balance Changes

For now, we still expect patches to be the primary way to deliver balance changes. Our internal processes aren’t designed to do these impromptu changes regularly yet, and we’ll often want to make more substantial changes than this tool allows. However, we may experiment with slightly more frequent balance on a small scale, to see if there’s an even better experience for players at our fingertips. Thanks for reading, and good luck on your next snap!

WHEW! That’s a lot of new content! We hope you’re enjoying our new way to play against your friends, ‘ BATTLE MODE.’ One of our favorite ways to play is to make up fun rules or conditions and then see what happens. Here are a few we love:

GOOD VS BAD: One player builds a deck with only Super Heroes, and the other builds a deck with only Super Villains. Caution: Debates about what deck Deadpool belongs in have been known to end friendships.

BEAST MODE: Only Animal (and Beast) cards are allowed. Careful not to upset Rocket Raccoon.

WEIRDWORLD MODE: Build a deck for your opponent.

These are just a few of our favorite formats. Can’t wait to hear yours!

See you in-game, and chat soon on discord.

BALANCE UPDATES

CARD UPDATES

  • Leader: [6/7] On Reveal: Copy all cards your opponent played to the location to the right, but on your side.
  • Dev Note: Leader is a prominent “finisher” in the current Snap meta, and we’re not happy with some of the card choices and play patterns he encourages, especially his strength against other cool 6-cost cards. We’re changing Leader to only copy cards played at the location to his right, with more base Power to compensate. We hope that this change will reward clever predictions and reduce the frustration of playing against him.
  • Wolverine: [2/2] When this is discarded or destroyed, regenerate it at a random location with +2 Power.
  • Dev Note: Wolverine sees virtually no play at the moment, which is a bummer given how iconic he is. We’re giving him a substantial buff to reward players for activating his effect and create new deckbuilding options at both low and high collection levels.
  • Note: We have updated his text from “play” to “regenerate” to better reflect his gameplay functionality. This is purely a flavor and clarity choice.
  • Text-Only Updates:
  • In addition to Wolverine, a few cards use the word “play” in their text but don’t actually play anything. This small update aims to avoid players misinterpreting how these cards interact with triggers that specify playing a card:
    • Hela
    • Jubilee
  • Sentry: Using more consistent language for similar effects.

LOCATION UPDATES

  • Text-Only Updates to:
  • The Raft: Removing the word “draw” for accuracy.
  • Vibranium Mines: Removing “a card” for brevity.

BUG FIXES

  • Killmonger no longer has the incorrect translation in non-English languages.
  • [Android] Pinning a Token card then tapping the device Back button or ESC on PC should no longer un-pin the card.
  • [iOS] UI elements no longer clip with the card ability info at the bottom of a card when a card is focused.
  • Fixed an issue that could freeze the game when interacting with the Season Pass Spotlight Card.
  • Fixed several Avatars that were not centered.
  • Fixed an issue that would sometimes allow cards other than Shocker to be removed from the deck during the deck edit tutorial.
  • News items should now show in date order.
  • Fixed an issue that caused some artist credits to clip out of the UI frames.
  • The Ping Ring should no longer show in the incorrect places in the Card Upgrade tutorial.
  • End Turn button should no longer switch between Turn 1, Turn 0, Turn 1 at the start of a match.
  • Murderworld no longer causes a delay at end of turn 3.
  • Maria Hill should no longer have a chance to spawn unreleased cards.
  • Fixed an issue where Wakanda’s VFX could show in the wrong location if Mirror Dimension turned into Wakanda.
  • Vormir’s text should no longer grey out when the opponent plays a card there but you haven’t yet.
  • Armor’s VFX disappear correctly if Isle of Silence spawns at her location after she’s already active there.
  • [iOS] Season Pass splash screen UI should no longer clip under notches.
  • Ebony Maw’s VFX should now move when the card moves.
  • Fixed an issue with Odin/Absorbing Man that could cause turns to take too long.
  • Updated the Fast Forward VFX so it appears with correct VFX on Android.
  • Improved the UX of moving a card to Cloak’s location for the first card you move when Cloak activates.
  • Updated a Venom and She-Hulk variant avatar that were not correctly aligned with the background.
  • [Windows] Mousing over variant or upgrade buttons on the card detail view no longer highlights both buttons together.
  • [Windows] The Filter menu no longer displays fullscreen instead of to the right side of the UI.
  • [Localization] Fixed multiple missing/incorrect translations.

KNOWN ISSUES LIST

  • Enemy titles aren’t fully centered on the matchmaking screen.
  • Notifications don’t appear for claimable rewards in the Ranked UI.
  • Attilan can occasionally cause a match to stall when its VFX activates.
  • Pasting a deck full of the same card can crash the game.
  • Celebration VFX for unlocking/purchasing an item can be slow to appear.
  • Altar of Death doesn’t give you bonus energy if Green Goblin and Hobgoblin are played on them and destroyed.
  • Death shows a cost update UI even when no cards have been destroyed.
  • If a player disconnects from a Friendly Battle, the game expiration timer is too long and the remaining player has to go through too many rounds to finish the game.
  • Taking no action at the end of a Friendly Battle and expiring the timer can cause the game to freeze.
  • Sometimes there’s overlapping/duplicate text on the End Turn button in a Friendly Battle.
  • The prompt for inputting an incorrect code for Friendly Battle is not descriptive enough.
  • Disconnecting from a normal match and then trying to join a Friendly Battle match will tell you the code is invalid and you have to finish your normal match before you can create a new Friendly Battle room.
  • Two players snapping on the same turn in a Friendly Battle can cause the health bar colors to show incorrectly.
  • Chibi Spider-Man from the Line In the Sand bundle doesn’t animate enough at higher rarities.
  • If Rogue steals an ability from a card on Gamma Lab before the location activates, she retains the ability text (but not the ability) and doesn’t count as a card without an ability.
  • Time Stone’s effect isn’t applied properly if it’s destroyed.
  • Token Shop doesn’t display referenced cards.
  • If the store refreshes while you’re on the Token Shop purchase confirmation, you buy the new card not the old card.
  • Playing more than one Absorbing Man in a row can cause a loop.
  • Angela doesn’t get buffed by cards returned by Luke’s Bar if she’s already active on the location when new cards are played.
  • Disconnecting from a Friendly Battle and connecting to a new game with a new code puts you in the previous Battle.

Battle Mode 1.0 is coming soon!

MARVEL SNAP will release version 1.0 of its brand-new competitive mode in just a few weeks. As we put the final touches on this beta feature, here’s deeper insight from Associate Design Director at Second Dinner, Kent-Erik Hagman.

Introducing Battle Mode

When designing MARVEL SNAP, it was absolutely critical to us to make the most fun, accessible card battler ever. We wanted a card battler anyone could get into so that more people than ever before could experience just how fun card games are! But that was just the beginning.  We also wanted an ultra-competitive way to play against friends. Something that takes the gameplay, bluffing, and mind games to the next level.

Enter our newest game mode: Battle Mode. It’s the most fun, competitive way to play MARVEL SNAP.

Great, but what is Battle Mode?

Battle Mode pits two opponents against each other through multiple rounds. Each player starts with 10 health. Instead of Cubes, what’s at stake is the amount of damage the winner will deal to the loser. If you can deplete your opponent’s health to zero, you win!

In Battle Mode, the stakes become front and center. Every SNAP and Retreat takes extra meaning, as every point of health is critical to remaining alive.

Further, each player’s deck is locked for the duration of the Battle. This means you’ll quickly learn what cards are in their deck, and your opponent might be aware of what sneaky tricks you’re hiding.  Keeping track of what cards in your deck haven’t been seen by your opponent can make all the difference in whether you can squeeze out an extra SNAP.

It’s turn 3, Bar Sinister just appeared. Your opponent SNAPs… you know they’re playing Green Goblin since you saw it last round. If you stick around another turn, you’ll lose 2 health! But if you retreat now, you’ll only lose 1! But you have Nightcrawler in hand, which your opponent has NOT seen yet, and your cards flip first…so you SNAP back and hope your opponent takes the bait!

Design Philosophy

When coming up with a more competitive, head-to-head format for MARVEL SNAP, it was critical to us that we kept the ability to bluff and tactically retreat. If anything, it was important we bring those elements to the forefront.

We also knew that over a series of games, the mind games of learning and anticipating what was in your opponent’s deck and their specific playstyle was something that would add a ton of fun. There’s pure joy in knowing what your opponent wants to do and trying to guess if they’ll do it or if they’ll feint in another direction.

Finally, it was really important to have a mode where it was clear who the winner and loser was. In a normal match, there’s a lot of wiggle room for just how many Cubes you win or lose by, and we wanted a definitive winner. There are no ties in Battle Mode!  Aside from proving who is best among your friends, this will unlock the ability for the community to run MARVEL SNAP tournaments!

Mistakes Along the Way

While developing Battle Mode, we tried some things that ended up not quite working. We tried a bunch of different Health values. We tried a mode where the Reality Stone transformed cards in your hand before each game. Developing in Unity, it was super easy to jump in and try out wild new ideas.

Early on, we saw players playing no cards in games 1 and 2 to scout their opponent’s decks, paying a couple of Health to gain critical information. Back then, Heath Pools were much larger so a couple Health meant very little, and as we lowered total Health, those first couple games could make all the difference

Battle Mode takes about 20 minutes, but in early playtests between two players who retreat back and forth for a series of 1 Health games, it took much longer.  To keep Battles around 20 minutes, we added “High Stakes Rounds” which kick in starting on Round 5.  High Stakes Rounds start with the stakes at 2 Damage, so it’s much more deadly.

Another thing we learned was that if players took some early beats and were 1 game away from running out of Health, they could SNAP with impunity since it doesn’t matter if they end up at zero or negative 6; death is death. We wanted to reward players for early victories, so now, you cannot deal more damage than you have Health remaining. It means that coming from behind is possible, but those early victories don’t become irrelevant. And the “bluffing” aspect of the Snap remains intact as your opponent cannot risk health they do not have.

Wrapping It Up

We’re very excited to get Battle Mode out to everyone as soon as we can. This has truly been a labor of love, and we can’t wait to see how players enjoy this first cut of Battle Mode!!

Get Ready For The Drop

It’s been a couple months since we introduced Series 4 and Series 5 cards, and we’re excited about our first-ever Series Drop! With every Series Drop, some Series 5 cards will move to Series 4, and some Series 4 cards will move to Series 3.

Series 5 cards that will move to Series 4:

  • Valkyrie
  • Super-Skrull
  • Bast
  • Shuri
  • Black Panther

Series 4 cards that will move to Series 3:

  • Luke Cage
  • Absorbing Man
  • She-Hulk
  • Titania

When cards drop Series, they become 10x more common in Collector’s Reserves, and much cheaper in the Token Shop.

We look forward to doing a Series Drop every month!  Series Drops currently require a patch, so the exact date and time may vary.  The patch with this Series Drop (and the ability to Battle friends!) is currently planned for January 31st, though if we run into last minute issues we may choose to delay for a little longer to make sure things work correctly.

When choosing which cards to drop, we will often start with some of the ones that have been in that Series the longest.  That is, except for…

The Big Bads

All cards will eventually become easy to obtain through enough Series Drops. However, there are currently two cards that we do not plan to drop down a series: Our favorite 6-Cost supervillains, Thanos and Galactus. They’re just too dang epic.

Introducing “First Edition”

We’re excited to announce a new feature that we’re working on: First Edition Badges!  If you acquire a Series 5 card before it moves down a Series, that card will show a “First Edition Badge” when you inspect it. It’s a way to show that you got the card when it was brand new.  This feature will take us some time to build, but our goals are to retroactively apply First Edition Badges to cards earned before the feature comes online AND to show the Badge on all variants and Infinity Splits of the card!

Token Shop Improvements

The Token Shop has been live for a little while and we’ve had some time to experience what we like and don’t like about it.  We love how it allows players to make progress towards the cards they want most.  We don’t love that the hottest, newest cards don’t feel very accessible to players who haven’t completed Series 3.  Once players complete Series 3, they start earning 500% more Tokens on the Collection Track, but before then, Series 4 and 5 can feel out of reach.  We are starting to experiment with changes we could make to let players who are still progressing through Series 3 feel quicker progress towards the new hotness.  It’s going to take us a little time to make these changes, but our goal is to make the experience of earning Series 4 and 5 feel much better for folks who haven’t completed Series 3.

With so many new cards dropping to Series 3 and 4 and more dropping every month, things are about to get spicy!  We can’t wait to see what wild new decks everyone will build!

  • New Card Sounds: Aero and Polaris

Art & Visual Effects

  • New Visual Effects for Aero and Polaris

Balance Updates

CARD UPDATES

  • Aero 5/8 -> 5/7

Developer Comment: Aero’s effect can be a very powerful disruption and control tool. While previously, we buffed Aero up to her current statline, players have since learned to utilize her to great effect, so we think it’s appropriate to reduce her Power a bit.

  • Galactus 6/3 -> 6/2

Developer Comment: Even at the highest ranks of play, Galactus and decks using him are demonstrating concerningly high cube-gain and win rates. Not all of these decks overtly herald his approach, and the range of cards that can complement him has proven wide and difficult for some decks to counter. We’re taking one Power away from Galactus now and evaluating whether or not we should make more meaningful changes to his design in the future.

  • Leader 6/4 -> 6/3

Developer Comment: Leader’s effect is proving to be very frustrating to many players and polarizing in its ability to lock down games and discourage playing some other 6-Cost cards. We are taking a bit of power away from him for now and exploring further changes to the card in the future.

  • Nova 1/2 -> 1/1

Developer Comment: Nova’s effect makes him much stronger than an average 1-Cost card, so we don’t think it’s appropriate that he has the stats of an average 1-Cost card.

  • Drax 4/4 On Reveal: If your opponent played a card here this turn, +4 Power. -> 4/5 On Reveal: If your opponent played a card here this turn, +3 Power.
  • Groot 3/3 On Reveal: If your opponent played a card here this turn, +3 Power. -> 3/4 On Reveal: If your opponent played a card here this turn, +2 Power.

Developer Comment: We believe the Guardians’ effects create fun moments, but they can feel too sink or swim. We’re giving Drax and Groot a small buff to their baselines to make them less risky to play and hopefully open them up as more viable contenders in the 3 and 4-Cost slots.

  • Hazmat 2/1 -> 2/2

Developer Comment: While we are aware of the Hazmat combo decks that may feel strong, Hazmat is actually doing fairly poorly overall. We’re giving the decks she enables a small buff with this update.

  • Black Cat 3/6 -> 3/7

Developer Comment: Black Cat sees virtually no play, so we’re giving her an extra Power to make running her more worthwhile.

  • Nakia 3/1 -> 3/2

Developer Comment: We think Nakia’s effect is a fun mechanic to play with, but she’s currently seeing very little success. We’re hoping a small buff will make her a more appealing option.

  • The Fast Upgrade section should no longer disappear from the shop.
  • Buy buttons no longer disappear if you’ve purchased a variant in the shop, and the shop refreshes.
  • Season Pass spotlight card “Variant” text no longer overlaps with the card itself.
  • End Turn button should no longer show 1/6 then 0/6 then 1/6 again at the start of a match.

  • Cards and locations that add cards to your hand or the opponent (eg: Black Widow, Lechuguilla) can show cards going to the wrong player.
  • Ebony Maw’s VFX don’t move if the card moves.
  • Kingpin’s VFX may play in the incorrect location.
  • Isle of Silence VFX goes red even for cards that don’t have ongoing abilities.
  • Jessica Jones’ VFX are hard to see.
  • Rockslide/Okoye can cause turn ends to take too long.
  • Iceman can cause cards to cost more than 6 if they are temporarily lower cost before Iceman changes their cost.
  • Cards can overlap when Lockjaw replaces them.
  • Lockjaw can bring back cards that were previously destroyed.
  • Lockjaw doesn’t always interact with Leader properly.
  • Vault doesn’t let Multiple Man back in if he moves from the location on turn 6.
  • Arnim Zola’s copied cards can be added to locations locked by Professor X.
  • Switching into TVA on turn 4 or away from Limbo on turn 6 causes the wrong text for “Next Turn” cubes won/lost.
  • Widow’s Bite doesn’t prevent Attilan from drawing cards.
  • Some UI elements (eg: Ranked reward number, Deck name) can go missing temporarily when switching between languages.
  • Several text elements are too small in Thai.
  • PC – Pressing Escape while in the Token Shop UI can unpin cards.
  • PC – Adjusting window size can cause the carousel to be misaligned.

Goodbye 2022, Hello 2023!

It’s hard to believe that we launched MARVEL SNAP globally just a little under two months ago! And since then, thanks to YOU, we’ve won multiple awards, including Best Mobile Game at the Game Awards, and released a fun animated cinematic ‘HERO’ with some of our favorite musicians.

We’ve always said that Global Launch is the beginning of our journey together, and we weren’t kidding. Your feedback (in places like our discord community) impacts what we prioritize, focus on, or change. We’re excited about what the future holds; let’s talk a bit about that future.

Let’s jump in, shall we?

Coming Soon

Items listed here are in the final phase of development, and these features are almost ready to release to players! We’re cleaning up, polishing art, and squashing bugs. Our Quality Assurance teams scrape over all the little details to ensure we have as smooth an experience for players as possible. Once features are “Coming Soon,” we can start to plan release dates, timelines and share some insight with players.

The team is hard at work putting the finishing touches on a few much-anticipated features:

  • Battle Mode vs Friends
  • Name Change
  • Artist Credits
  • Russian and Vietnamese Language Support
  • Infinity Split Mod Details

What’s Battle Mode vs Friends?

Battle Mode is a new way to play MARVEL SNAP. In Battle Mode, each player starts with 10 health, and the winning player deals damage to their opponent equal to the stakes of the game. If you doubled down and SNAPPED, you’ll do 4 damage to your opponent instead of 2 – or retreat early and only lose 1 health! Players will play a series of games against each other with their same deck until one player has no health left.

The way it works is simple. You either CREATE a match or JOIN a match. The player that creates a match gets a code they’ll need to share with their friend.

We’re aiming to release this in the next month or two and hope you’re as excited as we are to play vs your friends or organize fun community competitions!

What’s Name Change?

You’ll finally be able to correct that poor decision you made when choosing a username. Looking at you PineappleOnPizzaStinks. I mean, really? Who HATES Pineapple on Pizza??? Not I, that’s for sure.

What are Artist Credits and Infinity Split Mod Details?

When you’re looking at a card in its detailed view, you’ll be able to tap the nameplate at the top to see Artist Credits and what Infinity Split Mods are on that card.

Russian and Vietnamese Language Support

We’re adding these two languages to the list you can select.

In Development

Game features in this section are actively being developed, iterated, and improved upon. Our production team dedicates team resources, generates tasks/timelines, and ensures we’re moving forward. Features and systems in this bucket can change dramatically – we might find our initial idea wasn’t fun OR we might discover we can achieve our goals in an unexpected way!

In Development

  • PC Widescreen UI
  • Smart Decks
  • Unranked Mode
  • New Competitive Modes

What are Smart Decks?

Creating a new deck can be so much fun. Sometimes you might know precisely what 12 cards you want to play; other times, a few cards work together, but you’re unsure what to add. That’s where smart decks come in. Maybe you’re unsure how to finish that ‘move deck’ you’ve wanted to play. No problem. You’ll be able to finish your new deck with the tap of a button. More details to come as we get closer to releasing this feature.

What’s Unranked Mode?

In Unranked Mode, players face off against other players without the risk of losing Ranks or Cubes while still making progress on their Missions. This is the perfect place to test new decks and strategies.

What’s Competitive Mode?

We’re looking to use Battle Mode in fun new ways. More details will come in the future as we make progress on this.

In Concept

We have BIG dreams about what we’d like to bring to the future of MARVEL SNAP! The first step towards these dreams is turning ideas into concepts through discussion, documentation, and planning. Features currently in the “In Concept” phase have been initially scoped out and given shape but have not yet had any engineering or development work done in the game itself.

This is where we’d love your feedback the most! Concepts listed in this section may be elevated in priority, rescoped, or scrapped entirely… or we might hear something completely new from the community!

Here are some of the future concepts we’re thinking about for MARVEL SNAP:

  • Guilds (Social Systems)
  • Infinity Rank Leaderboard
  • Collectible Emotes & Card Emojis
  • Mythic Variants
  • Booster Magnets
  • Avatars & Titles by Deck
  • PC Controller Support
  • Season Cache Improvements
  • In-Game Events

Let us know what you think, and please continue to share your ideas for the future of MARVEL SNAP! Thank you again for your feedback and for making 2022 truly Legendary!

General Updates

GENERAL

  • Emotes: A new set of emotes are available for use! Check them out while playing a match by tapping your avatar & let your opponent know how you’re feeling about the latest play!
  • The matchmaking system will allow for longer wait time for high-ranked players to increase the likelihood of finding a more competitive opponent.
  • Weekly Mission requirements have been reduced to 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 completed Daily Missions. (Previously 5, 10, 20, 30, and 35)
  • The Game Result Screen has been visually upgraded.
  • Card art variant names are now visible in the Shop and Card Detail screen.
  • Doubled the max number of Decks from 10 to 20.

OPTIMIZATION

  • Haptics are now supported on Android devices (they were already present on iOS).
  • Game resolution has been increased on Low Settings.
  • Added a “Download All Assets” button in Settings that will let players choose to download all game files at a time of their choice. Downloading ahead of time will improve match game performance for players on devices with less RAM, slower processors, and/or poor network connectivity.

LOCALIZATION

  • We have added initial support for the Spanish language. You can switch between languages in the Settings menu. This includes both text and voice overs. Please note that there are some areas of the game that are not yet fully translated.

ART & VISUAL EFFECTS

  • To make for a snappier experience when moving, Ongoing effect updates are paused while moving multiple cards.
  • Colossus visual effects have been disabled for now (to prevent the “glowing Colossus issue”).

    • Agatha Harkness

Balance Updates

CARD UPDATES

  • Arnim Zola: No longer adds copies of a card if his target was not destroyed.
  • Baron Mordo: [2/3] On Reveal: Your opponent draws a card. Set its Cost to 6.

Developer Comment: Baron Mordo’s Cost increase tends to be very inconsequential in practice. We’re bumping his effect’s Cost markup to make it more impactful.

  • Jessica Jones: [4/4] On Reveal: If you don’t play a card here next turn, +4 Power.

Developer Comment: Jessica Jones’ effect is one that was a bit too stifling to be reliant on turn 6. So we’re looking at a change similar to Rescue, where moving her to be a 4-Cost card will allow her effect to see more play.

  • Lady Sif: [2/4] -> [3/4]

Developer Comment: Lady Sif’s effect in combination with many other cards is very strong, especially on a 2-Cost card with high power, so we’re moving her up to 3-Cost.

  • Mister Negative: [4/4] -> [4/1]

Developer Comment: The Mister Negative deck is very strong, and tends to have an unhealthy play pattern of skipping your first few turns. We are taking Mister Negative’s Power down to tone the deck down. While this may seem like a big change, the power of the deck is largely in the cards hit by Mister Negative so we don’t forsee this being a massive hit to the deck’s overall power.

  • Professor X: Ongoing: Lock down this location. (Cards can’t be added, removed, etc.)

Developer Comment: We’re making Professor X’s text more general, as the expectation for his effect tends to be more aligned with “This location is locked and nothing can happen” rather than “Only these effects in the parentheses are disabled”. Along with this change, Professor X will now prevent cards from switching ownership, like Hobgoblin.

  • Spider-Man: [4/2] -> [4/3]

Developer Comment: Spider-Man is a bit weak right now, so we’re giving him an extra Power to help him out.

  • Thor: [4/6] -> [3/4]

Developer Comment: Reducing Thor’s Cost should give players more flexibility when they play him, and also allow more time to draw Mjolnir.

5-COST CARD UPDATES
  • Abomination: [5/8] -> [5/9]
  • Aero: [5/6] -> [5/8]
  • Black Bolt: [5/7] -> [5/8]
  • Blue Marvel: [6/4] -> [5/3]
  • Devil Dinosaur: [4/0] -> [5/3]
  • Gamora: [5/7] On Reveal: If your opponent played a card here this turn, +5 Power.
  • Klaw: [5/4] Ongoing: The location to the right has +6 Power.
  • Red Skull: [5/14] -> [5/15]
  • Ronan: [5/0] Ongoing: +3 Power for each card in your opponent’s hand.
  • Spider-Woman: [4/4] -> [5/7]
6-COST CARD UPDATES
  • Agatha Harkness: [6/13] -> [6/14]
  • Hulk: [6/11] -> [6/12]
  • Onslaught: [6/6] -> [6/7]
  • Spectrum: [6/4] -> [6/5]
  • Ultron: [6/8] On Reveal: Create four 1-Power Drones at each other location.

Developer Comment: Many of our 5 and 6-Cost cards don’t quite live up to their lofty Energy Costs. We’d also like to give our 5-Cost cards some more identity, as many of them at the moment have rather simplistic effects compared to many of the other cards in Snap. We’re making a suite of balance changes targeted at the 5 and 6 Cost range to help some cards that are underperforming, and provide some more interesting options at 5 Cost.

LOCATION UPDATES

  • Attilan: After turn 3, shuffle your hand into your deck. Draw 3 cards.

Developer Comment: We believe that moving Attilan’s trigger to the end of turn 3 will make it clearer to players, as they’ll be able to easily tell that they have until turn 3 is over to use up their hand.

  • New Location – Necrosha: Cards here have -2 Power.

Developer Comment: Klyntar has been replaced with Necrosha.

Bug Fixes

In-Match Fixes
  • Cards should now be less likely to show up black/blank/empty during matches.

Developer Comment: We fixed the main bug where bunch of card art would suddenly turn black in the middle of a game! We are still on the look out for other ways card art could show up black.

  • Fixed an issue where Lechuguilla or Korg adding rocks to hand could cause clients to freeze.
  • Fixed a bug that should prevent Deathlok visual effects freezing some devices.
  • Players can now retreat if your opponent plays Daredevil on turn 5 and snaps.
  • Fixed a bug where two friendly Daredevils would result in their effect being canceled.
  • Wong’s ability now functions correctly with Onslaught if Onslaught is played after Wong.
  • On Reveal effects triggered by Odin are now doubled by Kamar-Taj.
  • Improved speed of Ka-Zar and Blue Marvel’s abilities when they update card power.
  • Fixed an issue where Domino can get stuck in your hand after you’ve played her.
  • Fixed an issue where Hulks created at Gamma Lab retained modifiers from before transformation. Gamma Lab now turns token/spawned cards into Hulks properly.
  • Fixed an issue where The Peak did not visually change the power of some cards.
  • Xandar VFX activation cleaned up
  • Falcon VFX now moves when Falcon moves
  • Fixed an issue where cards could go invisible in-hand when switching hands with your opponent.
  • Limbo VFX should no longer appear if the game is already over when the location is revealed (if Dark Dimension or Invisible Woman is in play).
  • The opponent’s cards in the top-right of the rightmost location should now be easier to tap to focus.
  • Mister Fantastic no longer plays VFX if he is played on the only location remaining (if Worldship is in play).
  • Slightly adjusted the End Turn button’s readability and transitions.
GENERAL FIXES
  • Fixed an issue where auto-pushed season rewards could soft-lock the client.
  • TVA no longer prevents missions from completing correctly.
  • Death’s body is no longer missing on her base card art.
  • Collector’s Cache/Reserve images no longer disappear when scrolling the CLTR.
  • Swiping through cards in the collection no longer closes the card instead of moving to the next card.
  • Pasting a deck if you do not own all the cards will now create a deck with the cards you do own for that copied deck.
  • Players should now get credit for completing the “Win Matches with a Snap” mission when their opponent snapped (it was being counted only when the player snapped).
  • Season Key Art should now show up again on Android
  • Android “Back” button should now take you to the main screen if used in the Shop and Collection screens.
  • Many bug fixes for various card and avatar art (this may cause your game to re-download some assets).
