BALANCE UPDATES

CARD UPDATES

  • Mojo
    • [Old] 2/2 – Ongoing: If both players have 4 cards at this location, +6 Power.
    • [New] 2/2 – Ongoing: If both sides here are full, +6 Power.

Developer Note: This is just a minor consistency adjustment, bringing Mojo in line with Dazzler and the way she cares about full locations vs. a specific number of cards at those locations. We’ll continue exploring exactly where and how to draw that line. For example, Ant-Man requiring his teammates to get his buff feels slightly more resonant, but it’s more likely than not he’ll get this treatment next.

  • Uatu
    • [Old] 1/2 – Once this is in your hand, you can see the unrevealed locations
    • [New] 1/1 – At the start of the game, shows the right location to you.

Developer Note: The combination of Uatu’s effect being significant very early in the game but also dependent on drawing him has left this card in a tough spot. We’ve decided to start adjusting him by exploring a remedy that functions regardless of whether you draw him or not. We have some particular philosophies around this space, as it disrupts some of the tension we value in locations and we’re not looking to make Uatu a staple of Series 1/2 play. This is definitely an overly safe adjustment, and we may return to the card again based on how it goes.

  • Mantis
    • [Old] 1/2 – On Reveal: If your opponent played a card here this turn, draw a card from their deck.
    • [Change] 1/2 -> 2/3
  • Cable
    • [Old] 2/2 – On Reveal: Draw the top card of your opponent’s deck
    • [Change] 2/2 -> 3/4
  • Maria Hill
    • [Old] 2/3 – On Reveal: Add a random 1 or 2-Cost card to your hand.
    • [New] 1/2 – On Reveal:Add a random 2-Cost card to your hand.

Developer Note: These adjustments are all related, so we’ll go over them as a group. These three cards, along with Agent 13, Sentinel, and Snowguard, make up a cadre of characters that all add a card to your hand for a cheap cost under different circumstances. However, they’re also all overlapping one another a fair bit, existing in a tight range of Cost and Power combinations. We’d like to break that up a little bit to build in some differentiation as to how they’re used and where they might be played. It’s unlikely that this is the last tweak to this group we’ll make, but it should get the ball rolling and let us see more clearly how the live game values what each card is uniquely capable of bringing.

September 28th – Balance Updates

Welcome to another OTA. We’re locking in the changes below with both the release of Mobius M. Mobius and next week’s patch on the horizon, so we’re making fewer reactionary changes to what’s happening live. We do have one solid nerf aimed at the resurgent Devourer of Worlds, but the rest of these adjustments are maneuvering a few game pieces into the right places for other upcoming content.

  • Galactus
    • [Old] 6/7 – On Reveal: If you’re winning this location and this is your only card here, destroy all other locations.
    • [Change] 6/7 -> 6/5

We expected Alioth to find a fast home in Galactus decks, which wasn’t a problem in and of itself. Exciting new cards shouldn’t hit the cutting room floor because existing cards might like them too much, especially if that card is Galactus–the whole reason we reworked him was to give us a knob that could rein him in. Given his metrics spiked well outside our acceptable range for over a week, we’re taking a harder line with this change than usual based on the impact we need. We liked Galactus right where he was before Alioth, so that’s our target range for his performance.

  • Kitty Pryde
    • [Old] 1/2 – When this returns to your hand, +1 Power. Returns at the start of each turn.
    • [Change] 1/2 -> 1/0

Kitty has been places. She’s seen things. And it’s been a fun ride! Kitty was an integral player in the metagame’s best deck at least four different times, and each of those decks was meaningfully distinct from the rest. That’s a pretty rare feat, and speaks to her raw strength as a card that both eats excess Energy and has cool mini-combos, like Angela and Hulkbuster. However, as we continue to make similar synergies, we want other cards to get their opportunities to compete with Kitty. This change is a little preemptive, as we expect Kitty would be too strong in October without it, and we’ll likely continue to explore different executions of Kitty for a future patch.

  • Psylocke
    • [Old] 2/1 – On Reveal: Next turn, you get +1 Energy.
    • [Change] 2/1 -> 2/2

We’ve had this change internally for a while, but we wanted to wait and see how the dust settled on some of the live decks that play with Energy ramp and Cost reduction. We hope Psylocke can eventually join the Electro/Magik/Wave crowd as another common way to push for big plays. Ideally she maintains a distinct identity from those options as a 2-Cost card that offers different curves and deck design opportunities.

  • Squirrel Girl
    • [Old] 1/1 – On Reveal: Add a 1-Power Squirrel to each other location.
    • [Change] 1/1 -> 1/2

Like Mysterio and Shanna, Squirrel Girl’s total power has been on the low side for how much space she takes up among your locations. She’s largely been confined to supporting early Ka-Zar decks for new players and Death-based decks in competitive play. We’re glad to have her continue on in both of those roles, but she’s a fun and appealing enough card to give a little bit more Power to see if she can find more homes. She’s been acting pretty spooky since this change, though–you should be careful walking through Central Park next month.

  • Snowguard Hawk
    • [Old] 2/3 – On Reveal: Ignore all location abilities until the end of next turn (or the game).
    • [Change] 2/3 -> 3/3
  • Snowguard Bear
    • [Old] 2/3 – On Reveal: Trigger the effect of this location.
    • [Change] 2/3 -> 3/4

We’re happy that Snowguard’s rework brought her in from the cold. However, the bulk of her strength has proven to be in concert with Loki and The Collector, where the extra cards she generates are the primary reward and the auroras are secondary. We don’t mind that much–the auroras are situational themselves–but they don’t need to be so efficient in that case, either. The Bear is gaining more Power because his effect has proven by far the weaker of the two.

This change is the first of a larger series of adjustments you’ll see go live in next week’s patch, as we shift the Cost and Power of several small cards that add cards to your hand to get a more diverse spread of enticing options for different goals and playstyles.

That’s all for this week. Until next time, happy snapping!

Character Spotlight: Mobius M. Mobius

The almighty TVA Administrator — Agent of Time Mobius M. Mobius — has arrived in MARVEL SNAP!!

Ongoing: Your Costs can’t be increased. Your opponent’s Costs can’t be reduced.

Mobius was born within the Sacred Timeline as a human, but became a Variant that diverged from the timeline’s course of events and was abducted by He Who Remains, who suppressed his memories. Mobius was designated as an Analyst during his first few ages working for the Time Variance Authority, where he played things particularly by-the-books. Due to his meticulous attention to detail, Mobius was expedited to the position of executive in senior management.

During his first run-in with the Fantastic Four, Mobius attempted to prosecute them for illegal time use and continuity theft, but they managed to escape under his supervision. Mobius was resultingly at risk of demotion, and thus attempted recapturing the Fantastic Four. As such, Mobius M. Mobius had demonstrated his value by seeking employment with the Kang Dynasty in Chronopolis and instead received a promotion.

Eventually, Mobius was appointed to the highest authority and director of the Time Variance Authority. He acts as the primary administrator and is alerted via tachyon impulses whenever time travel or reality warps occur. As the highest authority at the TVA, Mobius has access to all of time and the TVA’s time travel technology, enabling him to send others through time and reverse things that happened to people in the past.

Mobius M. Mobius’ unparalleled control over all of time is portrayed through his MARVEL SNAP effect:

Ongoing: Your Costs can’t be increased. Your opponent’s Costs can’t be reduced.

With Mobius on your side, you can be sure that the proper flow of time is maintained! (At least, so far as it works to your advantage)

His effect is a natural counter to cards like Loki, Sera, and Zabu — Who attempt to unjustly manipulate time to their advantage — We can’t allow that!

Welcome, Mobius M. Mobius, to MARVEL SNAP!!

Character Spotlight: Ravonna Renslayer

Princess Ravonna Lexus Renslayer leads many lives: As an ambassador, she defends her people. As Kang’s one true love, she awaits to be revived. As a pirate and time-traveler, she seeks revenge.

Ongoing: Your cards with 1 or less Power cost 1 less. (minimum 1)

Ravonna was born to King Carelius, a ruler in 40th century Earth, known as Other-Earth (Earth-6311). Princess Ravonna was the sole reason the Kingdom of Carelius was left unconquered by Kang The Conqueror, who was smitten with the princess.

Ravonna Renslayer grew up a fiery, passionate royal who cared deeply for the citizens of her kingdom. She refused to abandon her people when threatened by the time-misplaced menace Kang the Conqueror. Kang approached Ravonna to seek her hand as his queen, but she vehemently refused his marriage proposals, seeing him as a mere commoner and not suited for royal marriage.

Kang, however, was not deterred, and brought the Earth-616 Avengers forward in time to battle him, but Ravonna was still not impressed. After Kang conquered her father’s kingdom, Ravonna saw that Kang defied his own rules of engagement by sparing her father’s life and she changed her feelings about him. Kang’s guard commander, Baltag, saw this move as a moment of weakness and turned Kang’s army against him. Ravonna and the Avengers allied with Kang against Baltag. Ravonna jumped in the way of Baltag’s blast, saving Kang’s life yet losing her own in the process.

Ravonna was later revived by the Grandmaster and left bitter at Kang’s failed attempts to save her. Thus, she made it her mission to seek revenge by besting Kang in battle.

Ravonna is skilled in the use of advanced future technology capable of teleporting, shape-shifting, and projecting herself into the dreams of others.

She employs her abilities as an agent of the TVA, or Time Variance Authority — The organization responsible for maintaining the proper flow of time. Her lingering contempt for Kang’s imperialistic ways motivates Renslayer to uphold time’s rightful order.

Ravonna’s mastery of time is represented in MARVEL SNAP through her ability to expedite low-power cards from your hand onto the board:

Ongoing: Your cards with 1 or less Power cost 1 less. (minimum 1)

Try combining Ravonna with the likes of Iron Man, Knull, DarkHawk, Patriot, and Mystique, which have low base power and potent Ongoing abilities!

Alternatively, you can pair Ravonna with low-power sabotage characters such as Goblins and Black Widow, or Psylocke and Kang The Conqueror for further time-manipulation!

September 14th – Balance Updates

Today, we are burdened with glorious purpose. It’s been a wild start to the season for MARVEL SNAP, with Loki leaping into the metagame and setting it spinning. While we know Loki decks have been everywhere–they’re one of the most popular archetypes in the history of the game–the actual performance of these decks has not been hyper-concerning, as the metagame rapidly shifted to favor linear strategies that could dodge their own cards well. Today’s OTA will seek to push a few other cards into the limelight while shaving some strength away from decks based on the trickster god himself.

  • The Collector
    • [Old] 2/2 – When a card enters your hand from anywhere (except your deck), +1 Power.
    • [Change] 2/2 -> 2/0

Taneleer Tivan, better known by the above moniker, has become the primary Power carry in virtually every Loki-based deck. We’re sure he’ll still fill that role well with this change, but this should help other decks build boards that at least threaten to compete with him. It’s a ding to his use in other decks, but that was already pretty low, and Loki will ensure he always has one or more homes available. This change also makes him more vulnerable to a few counters, such as…

  • Shadow King
    • [Old] 3/3 – On Reveal: Set all cards here to their original base Power.
    • [Change] 3/3 -> 2/3

The recent surge in Shuri and The Collector has been good news for Shadow King, who is seeing play despite being relatively inefficient and occasionally reliant on revealing last. We decided to take a similar approach here to what we did successfully for Luke Cage and Invisible Woman, boosting his base rate to a level that players can justify playing in a wider range of strategies than Silver Surfer and Cerebro. We expect this will also relieve some of the pressure on Shang-Chi by diversifying the ways in which players can counter huge amounts of Power.

  • Lady Sif
    • [Old] 3/4 – On Reveal: Discard the highest-cost card from your hand.
    • [Change] 3/4 -> 3/5

Lady Sif is one of those cards that’s always been solid and had a home in a couple specific decks, most obviously Apocalypse, Hela, and Agatha. However, her individual performance hasn’t been stellar, and when a lynchpin card for so many decks isn’t doing well, we like to poke at that a bit. We don’t feel this will upend the metagame or anything, but pushing some medium-performance decks towards some time under the sun is one of the things we like to do via OTA, so let’s try it out here.

  • Spider-Ham
    • [Old] 2/2 – On Reveal: Transform the leftmost card in your opponent’s hand into a Pig, keeping its Power and Cost.
    • [Change] 2/2 -> 1/1

We suspected the change in last week’s patch might be damaging to Spider-Ham’s usage, but we weren’t sure–probably something like 65% sure, but that’s a fair amount of doubt. Given we had an OTA coming just one week later, we decided to launch the patch with his 2/2 stats, then buff to 1/1 if that week indicated he needed the help. It did, so here we are.

  • Black Cat
    • [Old] 3/7 – If you end the turn with this in your hand, discard it.
    • [Change] 3/7 -> 4/9

Black Cat’s been one of our weaker-performing cards for a long time. That might not be something we can fix with an OTA, but we’ve played with this version enough ourselves to at least be interested in seeing what develops, especially with a couple future cards forthcoming. Yes, this makes you more likely to discard her than play her, but the only decks interested in Black Cat were already assuming you’d be doing that. Increasing her Power makes that a better perk, and the number 9 is especially apt for the feline femme fatale.

That’s all for this week. Until next time, happy snapping!

Character Spotlight: Alioth

Today we welcome the Supreme Time Being of the Timespan — A cloud of wrath which engulfs and consumes everything in its path across dimensions — Alioth the Usurper has entered MARVEL SNAP!!

On Reveal: Destroy ALL enemy cards played here this turn. (including unrevealed cards)

Alioth is allegedly the first being to free itself from the timestream — Alioth grew to become the Supreme Time Being over all realities between the dawn of life on Earth and Kang the Conqueror’s dominion — Stopped only by a temporal barrier which blocks Alioth from entering Kang’s realm, Chronopolis, and conquering all time periods.

Alioth travels by way of the timeless, transtemporal medium called Limbo — Which is a universe of sorts, within itself. Alioth sweeps over the atmosphere of Limbo like a storm system to absorb time-travelers and conquer all domains across time.

As a trans-temporal entity, Alioth exists across divergent realities as an enormous cloud destroying all it touches, causing massive temporal disturbance and devastation across entire dimensions.

Alioth’s temporal sovereignty is demonstrated in MARVEL SNAP through its massive destructive ability:

On Reveal: Destroy ALL enemy cards played here this turn. (including unrevealed cards)

This dark cloud of despair ensures that the location Alioth is played to is a secure win — If you reveal Alioth first, your opponent’s cards won’t even have a chance to reveal!

Character Spotlight: Loki

Loki, Prince of Asgard, Odinson, the rightful King of Jotunheim, and God of Mischief, has snuck his way into MARVEL SNAP!!

Loki’s lust for power drives him to mischievous schemes and wreaking havoc across the realms!

Loki Laufeyson was the biological son of Laufey, King of the Frost Giants, but abandoned and left to die shortly after his birth. Following a war between the Frost Giants and Asgardians, Loki was found by Odin, who took him in as his own son. Odin and Frigga’s biological son Thor and Loki were raised together as Asgardian Princes.

Throughout their formative years, Loki was always the mischievous one, while Thor was a steadfast do-gooder and a prime candidate to lead Asgard. Loki suffered from feelings of isolation and unequal treatment from his adoptive father Odin. Always resentful of living in his brother Thor’s shadow, Loki studied magical arts and earned the “God of Mischief” title, while his brother pursued physical prowess. Believing himself to be the rightful King of Asgard, Loki schemes to undermine the God of Thunder’s ascension to the throne, desperate for his father’s approval and to be seen as an equal to Thor.

Despite his deceptive, evil nature, and many attempts to steal the claim to the throne from his brother, Loki has gone through several amending phases with Thor, even working closely together at times. For instance, following the death of their mother Frigga, the two brothers united to seek revenge. Loki also revealed compassion for Thor when faced with the threat of his brother’s death, which led to his decision to hand the Tesseract over to Thanos.

Loki holds the title of most powerful sorcerer in all of ASGARD, with uncanny magical abilities including astral projection, shape-shifting, hypnosis, levitation, conjuration, and teleportation.

Loki’s unparalleled schemes and maneuvers are represented in MARVEL SNAP through his ability to make your opponent’s cards your own:

On Reveal: Replace your hand with cards from your opponent’s starting deck. Give them -1 cost.

This effect can create all sorts of astonishingly powerful, chaotic results!

Not only does Loki give tons of insight into your opponent’s deck — He also enables you to play their cards at a discount, which enables surprising combinations and commanding leads.

What better playstyle could be suited to the master of espionage and deceit?

Loki has sabotaged his way into the realm of MARVEL SNAP — and, for better or for worse — he’s here to stay! Welcome, Loki, to MARVEL SNAP!!
